The road to title #6 is starting tomorrow! With four Brazilian daughters, there is more than enough motivation in the Kuik household.
I have to admit that Germany played like they want the cup. Argentina also looks good (Brazilians hate to admit that!). Holland on the other hand, was somewhat of a dissapointment. But... <b>HUP, HUP, Holland </b>anyway! (That's for my Dad's sake!)

Not much sleep for me this month ; up every morning at 4:30 am ( PST ) to watch the first match, then recording the second and third matches and watching them after dinner ..
And while I have no particular favorites this time around, I do think it would be nice to see Spain add the WC to their European title.. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]
However, Brasil is ALWAYS a danger, Germany is playing incredibly well, Argentina also has a remarkable team ( but an idiot for a coach [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img] ) Ghana looks skilled as well as about as physical as it gets, and who knows what surprises may come out of this cup by the time it's over.. The Horns are called Vuvuzelas.... you blow it like a trumpet...you need strong lips and good lungs... its part of the soccer culture down here... nothing like a 125dbs to get you up off your butt. If you go to any games you need to take earplugs to prevent hearing damage and also to prevent hearing the sound for the next 2 days.
In the stadium its awesome (with ear plugs) , on the TV it becomes an endless drone as you can't selectively isolate it...
We are having such a party down here... the country has pratically shutdown and the streets are filled with flags etc... most cars are festooned with flags as well. Almost every business is flying flags of the world and inside the offices its one major colour explosion of flags, trumpets, banners etc... My kids ( 4 and 8) are even tatooed (temporarty) with flags.
For the last 4 months we have 'Soccer Friday' where everbody wears our national team's jersey or colours.
We have numerous fan parks that are permanent party places...
Its so hectic here, I'm off on safari to the Ocavango swamps to escape civilization for two weeks... I prefer the roar of a lion to the Vuvuzela.

"Escape" is not what I hope to do in 2014 when Brazil hosts the next World Cup. I want to spend all four weeks in the midst of the roar of the human "lions"! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] We still own a beach house in Brazil and I hope to make good use of it then. Sounds really "glamorous" but it only cost me ~$22,000 at the time! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img] It would cost at least 4x that today.
Congratulations to South Africa for pulling it off! There were many skeptics (myself included) and you are proving us wrong. Wish I were there!

It's amazing how, after decades of soccer being very popular with our young kids, the sport just hasn't caught on in the US. I had to search quite a bit to find out what happened in Saturday's US/UK game.
I've heard many arguments as to why soccer isn't popular in the US, but the best one I've heard is that it's because the game has no "sub plots." In other words, each series of downs in American football has a very specific strategy and desired outcome (to move the ball at least ten yards so the offensive team can keep possession), plus it fits well into TV boradcasts' commercial intervals. In baseball, as boring as this game can be, each at-bat is its own mini-drama. Basketball doesn't have any real sub-plots, but the scoring is so frequent that it doesn't matter.
Soccer, on the other hand, is, to the uneducated observer, a very long event with a single goal, which very seldom comes to fruition. Sorry, but count me among the great unwashed, attention span-challenged Americans who finds this numbingly boring. Plus, what's up with a game where you can't use your hands?
I don't mean to offend anyone with this (I'm the son of European immigrants who loved soccer, and found baseball and football to be appalling, for different reasons), and we Americans are obviously in the great minority here. It is certainly very cool to see all the excitement surrounding the World Cup. And I enjoy Formula One racing, which most Americans couldn't care less about. I'm just skeptical that soccer will ever catch on in a big way in the US.

From a very generalistic demographics point of view, local club soccer is mainly suported by the black population. Because of the 'colonial' link to Europe, there is fair of amount of interest in the European club soccer with the whites.
The sports of choice for the white population is mainly Cricket and Rugby. There are obviously large fan bases across all race groups across all the sports, but if you look at the proportions the differecnt race groups have their favourite sports.
The cool thing about this World cup, who cares what sport you enjoy, people are getting caught up the atmosphere and enjoying it.... I suspect after it all ends its back to regular programming with regards to sports of choice.
Me... Not really a big 'ball' sports fan... My first wife was South African, when people asked her what her "village" was like (Jo'burg), she would respond that it was like Houston (Texas)...that never failed to get a rise. I still have family in Capetown and long to see them again. It is a very beautiful country.
The World Cup is the best thing to happen to the world view of South Africa since the end of Apartheid.

South Africa should not be grouped under the rest of Africa. While there are many similarities with the rest of Africa, South Africa is a very developed and advanced country.
Have a look at this picture since I think it tells the story about the levels of development in AFrica vs. South Africa very well. As you can see, there is not all that much difference between South Africa and the US west coast, Australia etc.
I never had any doubt about South Africa putting up a world class event.

SHA-JR968 - With regards to your home team Germany, the youngest team playing this time around they looked great on the pitch. They looked as though they will make the semi-finals at least. I too was surprised to see USA tie the UK team especially after being reminded of the past score card against the UK of 2 wins and 7 losses. Both matches were great, especially in HD this year.
