Gap Between Side Window and Top: Cause and Adjustment? - swmic - 08-12-2010

Hello,

I just had a PPI done on a 95 cab I'm looking at in FL. The PPI indicated there is a gap between the back of the drivers side window and the vertical seal on the top. The gap is supposedly 1/8 - 1/4" wide. Do any of you that are familiar with these tops have any idea what might be causing this or what the fix would be? I don't know if there are adjustments on the window, seal, or top alignment to correct this.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Shawn

like any car, there are adjustments to the window tracks that allow for alignment - you have to pull the door panel to make them though

that isn't to say that there isn't something wrong with the frame that causes the gasket to sit high

blue968,

Was the bow broken?

The cab tops are notorious for the automagic operation getting out of alignment. There are many posts on this topic, but the reader's digest version is that there are 2 cables (left and right) that "pull" the top up and set it back down to close. The cables get out of alignment and closure becomes problematic. You can see from the the pic how an alignment issues might leave yuo with a gap around the window. This is pretty easily addressed by "manualizing" the top operation. Again, plenty of threads here using the search function (always use advanced search).

Ask your PPI mech to conduct a thorough inspection of the top and its operation. Although this obviously is not a major mechanical that will hurt your car's ability to motor, it can cost a couple grand to replace a top, so it's worth understanding the condition and operation.

I asked the shop to send me some photos of the problem. I've attached a couple of them showing the location of the gap. It certainly appears to me that it could be a broken bow. Thoughts?

HI Swmic,

Yes my problem was the main bow was broke and it looked very similar to your problem, but my top had a little sag in it in that area. I cant tell if your top has a sag because the picture is cut off around that area. May have to be adjusted as stated above but it looks just like the problem I had. When you put the top down and it gets about 1/2 way down do you see that side sagging down?

Update:

A top shop took a look and the car and found that indeed the bow was broken. I'm trying to purchase the car at a reduced price reflecting the repair cost and do the fix myself. The car is being sold on consignment and I have been in contact with the owner. The consignment dealer would like to repair the top at his shop, charge the owner top dollar to fix it, and profit from the repair. I've told the owner what I will give him for the car so the dealer can't BS him. This is getting exciting!

Thanks for your help. I'll update you when I hear more.

Shawn

this is NOT a DIY repair - some of them can be welded, but they also need to be reinforced to hold - it is extremely thin metal, and requires a GOOD welder to do the job

then, when you finally have the frame fixed, installing a top is also a major job - there is a manual on how to do it, but the dual motor setup and the adjustments of the microswitches and drives is complicated

this is definitely left up to a professional

unless you have an upholsterer you trust, i would let the dealer do it, and take it back to them if it's wrong

Or just buy mine. The top is in great shape

OK OK I know that I'm not supposed to solicit except in the Classifieds section but this is killing me.

Isn't this bow made of aluminium ??

Yes it is made of aluminium, I had my welded and reinstalled it myself. Knock on wood it has been working perfectly.
