Hello from Redmond, Wa - Bobs968 - 06-27-2020

I'm Bob, and joined this forum to help with research towards my first 968.  I've been a Porschephile for a long time and finally joined the club 8 years ago with a 2002 911.  I've owned several since then, including a 993 (similar front end and dash to a 968) and currently own a Macan GTS.  I'm looking to add a weekend car, something old enough that it's not loaded down with electronics and with great handling, that I can work on -- in other words, a 968.

Thanks.

Thanks.  I'll have lots of questions as the research moves forward -- it looks like this site will be a good resource.

Welcome. Enjoy your search!

Coupe or Cab?

6 Speed vs. Tiptronic?

Any color you would rule out?

Any features you must have?

Needs a little work or perfect?

Willing to purchase a high mileage perfectly maintained car over a low mileage garage queen?

I would suggest a nationwide search, since there is not likely to be one around the corner (though, in your neighborhood, I wouldn't rule it out).

Welcome to the club Bob, enjoy your ride when you get it. You might check out other introductions for "early on" advice. Cheers

Thanks for the greetings and suggestions.  Here's answers to Jay's questions:

Here's what I'm looking for:

Coupe

6 speed

Colors I'm looking for -- Guards Red, White, Black Metallic, medium to dark Blue metallic, dark Green metallic, Gray, Silver

Features I'd like to have: ROW suspension, LSD, Hi-Fi stereo, rear window wiper, non-sport seats at least 4 way power, 17" wheels

Needs a little work -- definitely not a garage queen

High mileage -- up to 130k -- is OK as long as there are maintenance receipts

Planning on the search being nationwide; I'm currently looking at Autotrader, PCA, regional Porsche club and Excellence ads

Timing -- with travel issues due to Corona virus I'm not expecting to to start contacting sellers until early next year

Wow, that's planning ahead, most guys post indicating they are looking for a 968, then there's a brief discussion, and then the next post is "GOT ONE!" . But given your list of desired features I guess patience is key. You could always buy standard and build your dream, it sounds like you want to be involved. Anyway, good luck with it all and have a good weekend.

Just a suggestion. With only 4600 or so of 968’s coming into North America I would, if possible, being doing an ongoing search.

  Probably didn't word that right -- the only must haves are that it's a coupe, has a 6 speed and has been maintained.  The others are like-to-haves.  I know there weren't a lot of these imported to the US so I'm going to be flexible -- and willing to look across the US and travel on short notice if I find what looks like the right one.

Thanks again for all of the advice!

Thanks Rap, I appreciate the advice.  I'm checking a couple sources 3-4 times a week, partly to get a better understanding of asking prices and partly to see what options are more common.

If by ROW Suspension you mean M030, there were only 100 M030 Coupes sold in North America. That should narrow your search immensely.

There are many good aftermarket suspension setups that equal or beat the M030, but some folks are very particular about originality.

Good point.  The goal is to use a combination of aftermarket parts and whatever M030 suspension and brake parts the car already has to get improved handling and braking.  I don't have any problems with non-original parts, as long as they're from well known, quality suppliers.
