Just got through replacing the starter with a Bosch rebuild, OEM new not available any more.
After 4 years on the Interstate battery, I thought that the slow cranking in the recent cold mornings was my battery telling me that it was about time to be replaced.
The battery tested fine, I got a second battery and put them in parallel to get 12 volts at twice the current, but the engine did nor turn over any faster. Good test for a bad starter, assuming that it engages and turns over the engine. Also checked the wiring for obvious issues and found none.
No brush rebuild kits are available for the starter, as far as I could tell.

+1, most likely the cables. Believe it or not I got all mine from the local auto parts.I used #2 cables.

cables all were fine. I got a new set of cables from Dan Wrey some time ago, but have not gotten around to swapping then out yet.
The cables that are on the car now do not look like 1995 vintage.
P.S. The 3L cranks over fast as hell now! What a difference.
While we are talking DC, allow me to switch to another question that I have. The battery in the PET shows an expansion tube; my new battery came with one but I do not see where the end that is not attached to the battery goes. Does it just re-direct any spillage down onto the tray? sees stupid to me if it does not exit the engine compartment.
Anyone have a tube that is attached to anywhere, or just spitting acid into the battery tray?

First, I'm confused as to your cranking issue. In your last post, you say the 3L cranks fast as hell now, but you don't say what you did to fix your problem. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
As far as the vented battery, all I can offer is that the batteries used in BMWs all have vents, because the batteries in all BMW models, as far as I know, are mounted either in the trunk, or, in the case of their SUVs and wagons, under the luggage compartment. The vent, which is connected to a tube that leads to the outside, is to prevent poisonous gases from entering the passenger compartment. This shouldn't be an issue in a car like the 968 which has the battery in the engine compartment.
Edit: After re-reading you first post again, are you saying the new Bosch starter fixed your cranking problem?

I know about the BMW, but what prompted the question is that the vent tube is shown in the Porsche 968 PET.
