I am thinking about adding an SC shift light
http://www.speedhut.com/product_detail-AUTO_NUMBER-736.htm but placement is a bit obtuse. I don't want to put a hole in the guage cluster and the steering wheel itself doesn't have any room in the front/centre so the only place I can think of is attached to the VIN plate on the left/lower windshield. Anyone have any input on a better spot or better/smaller indicator?

lol - in a suburu?
seriously, determining the shift point on a centrifugal unit is dependent on more factors than just rpms - boost is affected by load, so a light like that won't help much, and the fuel cutout point will keep you out of over-rev trouble - but if you are one of the people who doesn't "feel" the engine or pay attention to the sound (and there are plenty of them, and i'm not taking a pot shot), i guess a light at a fixed point would keep you from hitting the rev limiter

There is a location at the bottom of the tach or speedo on the automatics where Porsche placed an led. If you mount the black tube behind the cluster(plenty of room) and extend one of the leds you could mount it on the face of that gauge for a clean factory look. Set it just below the rev limiter, as flash said.

I definitely pay attention to my guages and it is more of a redline warning than a shift point. I was thinking more about those spirited moments when one (not necessarily me) thinks with the "other" brain, steps on the throttle, screams yeehaw and is too wrapped up in whooping the goofball in the Ford 'Stang than paying attention to the tach. Your correct that the limiter will certainly catch you but I am not a fan of redlineing. I figure if it's good enough for an Italia I should have one too <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

no worries - as i said, i can see the advantage - while i am one to listen to the engine and shift by sound, i understand the adrenaline overrev, and have done it myself
i have a mic for the phone right between the speedo and tach, but that light could go there too

Adrenaline overrev. At least I have a name for it now :0) My kid calls it "fail".
