NLA from Porsche (Germany). As soon as I heard that from Sunset I hit Craigslist and luckily found one just listed the day before. Got a brand new Colgan (OEM for Porsche but no logo) and Genuine Porsche mirror bra's (also NLA) plus a bonus set of rear "968" letters for 125.00.

No - for around town I'm OK with the clear bra. Tthe Colgan that I have is just shot - I've abused it I'm afraid. I want one for road trips cause some of the stuff out there is big and nasty.
I've decided to go with a clear bra before the front end is too far gone. This thing was showroom condition when I got it. 10,000 miles and 12 months later its less than that now. I've got some touch up and buffing to do, but I can't abuse the paint any longer. We all have our own neuroses I suppose. Mine is door dings and rock chips. Oil leaks and squealing brakes I can deal with. Dents in my fender make me cringe every time I walk by. I found a local guy with loads of experience that will do this and fix my DD as a package deal for a decent price. So I either pay the man now, or cringe for another year and pay him then, with another 10,000 miles and 12 months on the car. Should have done it last year before we ever drove it - arghhhhh.
Great price on that lot Dave. I've got the mirror bras and actually kindof like the way they look - like a touch of 80's retro. The nose mask looks pretty awful though. But I hate rock chips so....

So, your guy will do a custom 968 clear film cover for you because I'm pretty sure no one has a 968 kit? The 3M stuff? I put one on our new Audi Q5. The kit, with headlight covers, cost $150 cut for the Q5. The headlight film material is much thicker.

As a side note, but related, go to the Xpel website and order their headlight/foglight protection kit for the 968. Saves your expensive fogs! I also ordered a set for our new 2011 Acadia. Worth every penny.

I understand bras protecting the paint, but what does the headlight/foglight protection kit protect your lights from? I've been driving for 40 years and I've never had a problem with a headlight other than it burning out. Sometimes I think some of the after-market geegaws are solutions without problems.

The headlights aren't much of an issue given their angle with respect to the road, but the fogs on the 944 and 968 are a different story. Very, very each to crack them, and very, very expensive to get new ones. Finding good used ones (without pits and such) is also very difficult and pretty pricey in addition.
The $75 or so spent on the headlight and fog protectors far outweighs the the expense of replacing one fog... When something is relatively inexpensive compared to other Porsche-things and can provide a proactive measure, I'm in.
Sorta like the D1R firewall brace... Yeah, my car doesn't have the firewall problem, but for the price of the brace, it makes sense to take the preventative step...

Growing up in Maine where they covered the roads in the winter with *gravel* for traction in the ice and snow, headlight breakage is a yearly occurrence.

I just checked over at Pelican. OVER ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for the pair of fog lamps!!!! And the right and left are DIFFERENT PRICES???? That's insane, but it sure makes the protection kit seem more reasonable. Does the plastic film really provide protection from a flying rock? Does the film cut the strength of the beam? Heck, with prices like that I wouldn't be surprised if my car is worth more in pieces. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The film is pretty thick, and will protect in a lot of situations, however, quantifying just how much of a hit the film can take is damn near impossible... There will always be something that will exceed its capabilities and break the lense no matter what. I'm sure that in 90-95% percent of the situations, the film will do its job.
The film is clear and shouldn't affect the strength of the beam. If it does, it is probably only by a few percent.

+1 on the light kit. Cost me 45.00 from www.xpel.ca and worth every penny given the cost of our lights! I still can't find a decent drivers side (stone crack) and if the film protects the one perfect one I still have it saved me 450.00.

Reminds me that I need to get the light protection kit pronto. Frank has them on his car now, but I have not yet put them on the 94. I had enough road wrap on it to protect against IEDs, but now that I have pulled that stuff off I'm exposed out there on the freeways ")

Talking to a guy about the clear bra stuff the other day. He told me that installers are seeing some overheating of headlights with film on them. They are theorizing that the film is reducing heat escape. Result is crazing and even some melting from the inside. Our lights are glass so not a problem, and all the more reason to protect them.
