Sunroof actuator travel - Trueblue - 06-24-2011

I have a question for the 968 Gurus, My sunroof was working fine when I purchased my car a short time ago, but recently started acting up. When the key is set to the ignition position and the switch is depressed to the 'close' position, the lifting actuators continue to drive past the down/lock position to the roof release position. I have not spent much time yet sniffing it out, but was wondering if there's a commonly suspect component(s)to focus on initially.

Any advice would be great.............. Thanks.

Adjust the nuts on the motor drive. They control the point at which the clutch engages/disengages. Adjustment can be a little finicky. Mine started doing the same thing after putting on a new seal that was so much thicker and bulbous that it created a little too much resistance when closing and worked the nuts loose.

Start with those nuts since it's easy, but if that doesn't fix it, there are a couple of micro switches also located on the motor assembly that may be bad. Usually when they go out, the motor will continue to run and drag the steel cable across the plastic gears and yes, that's not good. My guess is that it's the clutch adjustment. Check out Clark's Garage site for a sunroof motor PDF. It's easy to get to in the driver's side rear wheel well.

And don't forget to Search here. We have discussed this bad boy many times in other threads.<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

That just happened to me. Just picked the car up today $1100 poorer. If you hear a noise attend to this immediately. I did not due to ignorance much to my chagrin and wallet!

Darryl,

Thanks for the advice, and the Clarkes garage pointer, the site has some very useful info regarding systems borrowed from the 944 and incorporated on the 968.

Rap,

Thanks for the advice. Sorry to hear about the big bill payed to the "Piper" regarding your repairs.......................................

My sunroof gears died almost as soon as I bought my car in 07. I replaced them and those broke within a year also. Now I just don't use the roof, which is no big loss for me.

The problem was that my 2 roof openers were not aligned properly to each other so while one hit the extension stop, the other was one thread too far and broke.

Also, I believe that the gears turn a certain amount of turns per button press: ie from closed unlocked, or closed to popped up.
