Can someone tell me what the purpose of the small, square, woven piece of carpet is located beneath the regular carpet in the trunk? It appears to be glued to the frame over the gas tank perhaps? Thx.

Yes, access to the fuel tank. It is glued to a removable piece. Might be fiberglass, I don't think the would use asbestos.
