My wife was watching "Housewives Of Beverly Hills" and I noticed a nice 968 Cab and a 993 in the driveway on the episode last week.

Get out!!! I remember watching 20/20 many years ago and seeing a story on Kelly Rippa. Her sister was almost killed in a car accident. When they showed a picture of the car it was a polar silver 968 cab. You know how fast the polar silver 968s are!!!

only if pushed from behind by an iris blue 968 and then left to roll downhill while in neutral, silver is definitely the fastest color... ;-)

ha, ha. but there is some truth to ( some ) sliver cars being faster.. I read a story which indicated that many years ago Porsche eliminated the paint on their race cars to save weight, leaving just the exposed silver color metal below. But shhh, do not let Flash read this or the next project he undertakes is to buy himself a power sander for X-mas
btw, how much does paint weigh on a mid-size car anyway ?!

Sorry to say, but it's actually black cars that are the fastest, here's the logic:
On a Sunny day, A black car will absorb nearly all visible wavelengths converting them to heat. This means that immediately surrounding the car is a "film" of warmer air. We all know that warmer air is less dense than cold air. This means that a black car has a minute layer of warm air surrounding it and an area of low pressure around the entire vehicle's surface.
This results in:
- Less form drag in the form of turbulence and wake around the car when moving
- greater laminar airflow around body curves and less transition points.

This is getting good...........
I think I remember back that a single stage paint job was around 40 lbs so a clear-coat job has got to be 50-60. I have been wrong before though.

hmmm, interesting theory, though might be tough to explain why it is that cars consistently record faster times the colder the temperatures are outside .. :-)

The story about not painting race cars relates to Alfred Neubauer, the legendary head of the racing team at Mercedes in the 1930's. As I heard it, the race cars came out some poofteenths of a kilogram heavier than the design weight and so he ordered the team to remove all the paint, leaving the bare aluminium bodywork a striking silver - hence the name "Silver Arrows". The colour then became the "racing colour" of Germany after WW2; it had previously been white.
The Porsche connection may be that Herr Dr.Ingenieur Porsche was I believe involved at some early stages with either the Mercedes or Auto Union racing efforts, or both[?], I think.
Besides, everyone knows that red cars are fastest. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/clap.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

i'd like to see somebody do the math to compare the aerodynamic gains of a black car, versus the power losses due to increased intake heat and increased component friction
p.s. - i already had all of the paint taken off of my car once. no reason i won't do it again
