Loud vibration sound from 1400-1500 rpm - Cobalt968 - 12-13-2011

Hi all,

1992 Porsche 968 Tip

My car has a horrible vibration noise from around 1400 to 1500 rpm in park, neutral, and on the road. You can not really hear it outside the car under the hood, but inside the car it is very loud and you can also hear it from the side of the car once you are outside. It sounds like it is coming from the center of the car. I have tried spraying the rubber exhaust hangers along with unplugging the variocam and neither fixed it. I am thinking it isn't engine related, because the sound is pretty much non-existent from the engine bay. Like I said it is louder inside the car than outside, and it only happens from 1400-1500 rpm maybe 1350-1550. So far, the way I have fixed it is to run in 3rd gear, but that isn't a long term fix.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Zach

what kind of sound? metallic? low frequency? high frequency?

It sounds like a heat shield vibrating (metallic, low), but I can not see anything out of the ordinary under the car. I have not got it up on a lift yet, though.

My friends 95 also has a very slight sound at the same rpm, I am guessing balance shaft noise. Maybe it is something vibrating somewhere that is making that slight noise 25x worse...

lol - it probably is a shield. check the little shield near the exhaust manifold. since you have a tip, you have two. one long one at the top, and a little one at the bottom.
