Has anyone participated in this before? If so, what was your experience? For those not familiar you can follow link to : silverstateclassic.com

It is a road race from Las Vegas to Ely Nevada where they close off the highway. Anyone can participate, you just have to pass a test your first year, and are limited to I think 115 mph average and top speed of 124 your first year, then you can go up in class the next year. The record is an average speed of over 207 mph - OUCH!!!!!!!! Sounds like a lot of fun. You can actually get a team w/ a minimum of 7 cars I think. Would be fun to get a group of 968ers in a team.

You can read FAQ's and check out other parts of the site. It runs once in May and again in September.

Would be like Gumball Rally w/o risk of getting tickets - gotta like that!

Wow this is kinda cool. Tough for those far away unless rentals available!!!

Sounds great, except for the first year speed restrictions ( although I absolutely understand and support having that precaution in place ). But I suppose 125 mph restriction is not that horrible so could be worth putting up with one event just so you let it go al out the second year. I'll look into this in Septermber - can we get at least six more 968s from around those parts ( Ca, Az, Nv , etc.) , or anyone elsewiling to drive a bit further and make up that group ?

I was considering the May run, but next year '13. I'm in the wine business, so the September run is definitely out for me due to harvest. Also, the weather in the desert in May would be much more comfortable than in September.

It sounds like you can get an exemption for the first year speed limitation if you already have track experience and show some certification evidence, or you can get certified at a driving class/school prior. Inspectors then just inspect the car/ tires etc.. To make sure they are capable and safe for the speed class you request.

Now that sounds like FUN! I have always hoped that they would have something like that around here once a year... A chance to let go without fear of a ticket and oncoming traffic!
