Lock button with diode? - shelby987 - 04-10-2012

I need to replace the lock button on the drivers side of my 968.....today I locked the car and saw that the pass. side button blinks to indicate the car is locked, but the drivers side does not blink at all. I assumed that the light was an LED of some sort with a clear button over it, obviously it is something more?

I see pelican parts sells this lock button with diode for $40! Is this all I need to replace this broken detail, or is there something more that will need to be replaced that I am going to find when the door panel is removed?

There are two wires running up to the lock button. Those might be disconnected or severed. I'd take the panel off to check before ordering the new lock button. It's not hard to do..

1) take the map pocket, speaker area off first.

2) Undo the three screws at the bottom of the armrest (don't worry about the top of the armrest handle).

3) Take off the backing for the door handle (one screw),

4) two screws at either side of the top of the panel (perhaps hidden behind plastic buttons), and pop the plastic pop fastners out along the bottom of the door.

and lift off...

Sorry, I guess I didn't explain this correctly, the button is literally broken, only a tiny piece of the stalk is exposed when the car is unlocked. On every other car I have worked on, a button screwed onto this stalk / linkage. I have looked at the exploded views in the manual, and I can't seem to see the detail I am looking for, if I am just looking at a broken wire to get the diode to light up, can I replace just this button, or is the diode section all one piece with the button?

I would like that alarm to be obvious to would be interested parties....as it is a convertible....and thieves always seem to think the cloth top is a quick and dirty way into a car when the doors are JUST locked.

Ah, I understand now. As far as I could tell, the button/diode is all one piece and sits atop a steel stalk that connects to the locking mechanism in the door. I need to replace one of mine as well, and have the part on order from Auto Atlanta ($40). I'll try taking my broken one off tonight for a closer look.

I took my broken one off today. It screws off the shaft. Knob and LED are one unit, the part number listed on the connector/inverter is 944637238.00. If I could find my camera, I'd take pictures...

So if the knob is broken I need the whole $40 unit then?

Yes. You might try looking at used parts place, they might be able to find you that knob cheaper. I believe it's common to the 944 as well, so it should be relatively easy to find.

pelican shows it as common with the 91 944.....I checked DCauto and it looks like the used part cost $30....probably not worth the risk of a brittle part for a $10 cost savings.

Thanks for doing the leg work on the investigation.....I will probably just be ordering a new one.
