Intro from Media Pa - 95968cab - 05-11-2012

Greetings. I took ownership of a white 95 968 Cab on 19 April 12 and drove to the Hershey PA Porsche swap meet. I have gone several times and this year was speciial as I got the park in the Porsche only area.

I have been admiring Porsches since hearing a whoosh and seeing the rear-end of a 911 on the German autobahns. I lived in Germany 1986 to 1990 in Tamm, a suburb of Stuttgart. I drove past the pink Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen on my way to the office each day. We returned to Germany for a visit last June and stayed in Tamm with a family we rented our apartment from. I visited the Porsche museum but did not have an opportunity to get the factory tour. Reason for a return trip.

I am 6ft 4in tall which limits the Porsche models I can drive. I was seeking a retirement car and tried out many different models to get a good fit. A 968 was for sale close to where I work so I went to try it on and to my surprise I had plenty of legroom and headroom. The driving position was comfortable and the Tiptronic was great to drive.

I researched the 968 model and car mag articles, especially Excellence, were very supportive of the car. My next step was to find one to buy. I looked for about a year and finally decided on the white with blue top 95 Cab. It has 59k miles on it but no service history.

I got my retirement car but still need to retire, hopefully this summer if I get to participate in a retirement incentive program offered by the Air Force.

Welcome! You will enjoy the forum and find a lot of useful information.

Your cab sounds really nice, but if you do not have service records and cannot be sure that the timing belt has been changed in the last 15k miles or 3 years, have it changed immediately. That's the one big and costly mistake that people make on these cars. Find a reputable Porsche mechanic in your area who is familiar with the 924/944/968 family and expect costs anywhere from $700 to $1500 depending on what you have done while you are in there. I would hesitate to drive or start the car until you know you have a fresh or reasonably fresh timing belt. And when they do fail, it is usually as you are starting up.

Aside from that issue, your 968 should prove to be reliable if you maintain it at regular intervals.

By the way, mine had 46k miles when I bought it last year. It has only 3k on the belt but it was replaced 7 years ago. Age is just as much a problem as mileage. I spent $850 and have slept very well since!

Did you park in the concours area with the other 968's?

I did not park in the concours area at Hershey. I did meet several 968 owners there and had some great conversations. I did not know to park there as I only had my 968 for 2 days prior to the meet. Looking forward to next year.
