Knock Sensor Replacement - jg968 - 05-18-2012

I'm looking for advice on replacing my knock sensors. Has anyone done this job? If so, can you tell me what to watch out for. I thought I read somewhere about using a compound on the mating surface between the sensor and the engine block. Can someone elaborate? I'd like to know what I'm getting my self into before I jump in!

thanks,

Jerry

Several threads on here about knock sensors, several of which indicate that fuel of moderate quality vs. excellent quality can cause problems. Is your fuel supply OK? Our cars really want 93 octane RON if I recall correctly, and that's probably not available everywhere.

I had Check engine light on, the code was for knock sensor 2. I run techron frequently, and did a run rite treatment, at a Midas, of all places, they had sale for 75 dollars, couple of weeks ago, and the light has not been back on. Smoother idle, and clean intake now.

Worth a shot if your check engine light is on indicating knock sensor.

Octane issue was my first thought too. I bought a bottle of Techron and will try it at the next fill-up. My light comes on after the car warms up. It goes out when the car is cool - like after first starting and driving a bit. Doesn't seem to be related to high revving or acceleration because I can just be cruising at 3000 RPM holding it constant and it will come on.

Very similar to me. Use the techron, with a half a tank. Look into a run-rite treatment, many threads on it. It is a slow drip into the intake maybe 20 minutes, a fuel additive, and physical cleaning of intake. It really is mazing how much build up can occur, and you see it with smoke ofterwards. Check midas. I went for shocks on a truck, and saw them doing the treatment on a Nissan maxima I remembered reading about it here, and went home and got the car.

Just don't trust the Run-Rite website - I did the "Please Contact Me" a week ago, and so far, no response.

Jerry, what is compelling you to change your knock sensors? Are you getting codes? I just replaced the front one (knock sensor 1) and it took 10 minutes. The rear one looks trickier. You just need some extensions for a 1/4 drive ratchet and a universal knuckle on the end. If you have a magnet handy, you may want it, since it's really easy to drop the bolt/washer.

Yes, the codes always say knock sensor.

Or cars are 91 (RON+MON/2) not 93. Euro parlance is 98 which is just RON I believe.

The bolts that hold in knock sensor need to be repalced as well. They are specific to pezio crystal knock sensors
