"Intermittent" - a problem that only manifests itself outside the mechanic's shop!
I brought my car into the shop for some TLC just prior to the Paso Robles event, including charging the AC. After we all parted ways, I headed inland and, as the temp rose, tuned on the AC, only to find it didn't work. My initial thought was that I had a leak in the system somewhere. Once I returned to the Bay Area, I didn't need the AC and thought I would have it dealt with the next time I brouht the car in for servicing. Then one day we got some hot weather, I turned the AC on, and IT WORKED! Later that day, I was in the car again, and the AC didn't work. I popped the hood and could hear what sounded like a pulsing bearing noise coming from the compressor, so I figured either my compressor or the cluch was giving up the ghost. Yesterday, I dropped the car off at the mechanics and, of course, the AC was working fine. By the end of the day, they told me they had started it 20 times during the day and the AC had worked every time! They speculated that perhaps the pressure had been too high and there is some kind of shut off or something that I didn't quite understand. So I guess I'll just hope it is now fixed or have to wait for it to completely stop working.

check the vacuum line to the heater control valve. if there is a vacuum leak there, it will open the valve, turning on the heat, and effectively turning off the AC.

Out of curiosity, do the vacuum solenoids in your passenger footwell click a lot when the car is cold, especially when hitting a bump?

My car is a 94 and it has pollen filters on the cabin air intake. If those become excessively dirt it will cause the the A/C to trip on and off. Don't recal whether cabs these filters or not.
