Engine Hose Replacement - Swin - 09-05-2012

I need to replace 2 hoses in the engine bay. The attached picture shoes the 2 hoses which appear to be double walled. Before I replace the hoses I would like to know what they are and what is in them. The hoses have threaded fittings on both ends which connect to steel lines.



One of the hoses is split on the outer ply, but nothing is leaking...yet.



Any help would be appreciated!

Those are the fuel lines. The split part is the outer rubber covering. You're probably ok with it like that, but replacing the fuel lines in these cars is never a bad idea really.



Edit: Also, be careful not to move the ends that connect to the fuel rail (on the right side of the picture) too much, or you could cause cracks to form in the rail. To fix that you'd need to either get a new rail or get yours repaired and pressure tested after. Don't ask me how I know this.

I have the same issue on both of my fuel line hoses; small pieces on the ends that have come off. I believe the outer jacket is just a protective covering (both heat and physical damage) that was slid over the actual fuel line prior to the ends being put on. Should not impact the function of the hose other than the small loss of protection in the areas of the missing outer jacket.

I believe that these 2 fuel lines are about $300 at Porsche!!!

correct. heat jacket to prevent boiling (they sit right over the exhaust)

I just replaced mine with genuine Porsche parts. I got them at Lindsey Racing for $75 each. As noted, be very careful of the connections at the fuel rail. One of the "nuts" is welded to the rail; although it LOOKS like it should turn, it won't...ask me how I know. Be very careful with this project, although it is relatively easy. The first time I started up after the exchange I had fuel leaking from one of the connections due to incorrectly inserting it. Expect the unexpected and take safety precautions (like keeping an appropriate fire extinguisher handy just in case).

ALWAYS USE 2 WRENCHES IN THE FUEL LINE CONNECTIONS, AND ONLY ROTATE THE CORRECT ONE!!!!

Thanks for the great feedback! I'll get the parts and use extreme caution with replacing them, but now you have me a bit scared and I may just pay my mechanic to replace them?



One last thing, if I am going through the effort to replace the lines, is there anything else I should replace that is associated with these lines or what they are connected to?

Do they really need to be replaced? If the outer insulation is all that is damaged, can you not just repair it or wrap the lines with more insulation?

since the fuel will then be out of the lines, the fuel filter and check valve are supposed to be changed every 60k or so

I need to ask a stupid question... I remember the one line going to the fuel rail, but why is there a second line? Forgive my stupidity as I continue to learn about these cars.
