Grammar 101... - Cloud9...68 - 11-08-2013

I'm posting this at the risk of sounding like a grammar snob, but I found it kind of interesting:

https://www.openforum.com/articles/8-common-grammar-mistakes-you-should-never-make-again/?extlink=of-syndication-ob-p

The writing on this site is generally better than on most, so hopefully I'm not ruffling too many feathers, but reading poor writing is just one of those things that bugs the crap out of me. Some of the common mistakes in this list are very basic, but items 3, 4, and 5 are like fingernails down the chalkboard. But I have to admit, I don't do 7 and 8 consistently correctly, and I may have violated 2 a time or to - lol. But I always appreciate the opportunity to improve, now that I know better.

i agree with all of those except #8. i know it is what i was taught at one point, but i still think the punctuation goes outside the quote, if the quotation is only a part of the sentence, and not the entire sentence (i.e. to reference a word like "their"). if, for example, i had put the punctuation before the quote that i just showed, it would really look weird.

i suppose using quote marks in that instance is incorrect to begin with though.

Cloud,

If I may I would like to propose "anyways" as a candidate for a irritating non word.

Tom,

Ooh, good one!

Grammar 101... - Dubai944 - 11-10-2013

Bad spelling bugs me. But I suppose an American centric (that's at the centre of, not at the center of) forum is probably the wrong place for me to discuss my pet spelling peeves…. such as check instead of cheque, color instead of colour, program instead of programme, and my 'favourite' (oops there's another one!) has to be aluminum instead of aluminium.

Ok, I will run away and hide now... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

What is more annoying is bloody Microsoft Office auto spell where it tries and puts a 'z' (zed not zee) in place of a 's'. eg. recognise, summarise, etc.

We are going to get banned..lol

I'm with you guys. I hate it when people add a "u" to color, favorite, neighbor, etc.

Oh, wait... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Perhaps a Pet Peeve thread would be more appropriate! Then we could be inclusive of all the frosts us. Or better yet we could call it Whines Unlimited! Or perhaps the administration could devise a system of demerits which automatically credits these mistakes. Accumulate so many demerits and you go back to being a newbie. We also could have an instructive response where if you wanted to remain at your current status you would have to write the correction to your mistake 1000 times in a newly created area called Corrections. Accumulate so many stints on the Corrections page and we could then have a vote as to whether or not you could remain a member of the Forum.

I of course would quickly become a founding member of the Corrections elite.

The main description of my current job is "writer"... when in actuality it is more.... editor. The debates we have most often in the office is, from what I can best deduce, based on a generational gap. They are teaching some grammar and syntactical rules differently now than when I was in school. The two biggest arguments?

1. How many spaces between a period (or question/exclamation mark) at the end of a sentence and the next sentence? One? Two?

2. The (non)existence of a comma before the last item in a list. For example: You could have ifs, ands or buts; or you could have ifs, ands, or buts.

Grammar 101... - Cloud9...68 - 11-10-2013

J.C.,

Your'e right that the rules of grammar tend to evolve. I was taught to put two spaces after a period, and also after a semicolon, but I often see people using just one. I always put a comma before the last item in a list - leaving it out looks weird to me.

Speaking of commas, the other thing that bugs me is the comma splice (placing a comma, rather than a period or semicolon, between two complete sentences), but it's so common that I've learned to take a deep breath, and un-clench my teeth when I see one.

Grammar 101... - flash - 11-10-2013

i've never heard of using 2 spaces after a semi-colon. 2 after a colon, yes, but not a semi-colon.

definitely 2 after a period.

failure to use commas makes me crazy. it's like people don't actually read what they write. if you read it, and you take a pause, then you use a comma. pauses are excellent emphasizing points, and should be used.

"Irregardless, if you type only in lowercase, your in affect not entitled to an opinion in this thread." <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/icon_lol1.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Whew, I couldn't work any more grammatical or word-usage errors into that without my head exploding! It was especially difficult mis-spelling the word "you're". That one really trips my trigger for some reason. "Irregardless" was tough, too.

In reality, I have to think about "affect" and "effect" from time to time, but I'm getting better at it. And just last week I printed out a little card that reminds me of the proper usage of "i.e." and "e.g.".

Unfortunately for years I depended on my secretary to insure that spelling, grammar, etc. was correct. So, I must apologize in advance for my misuse of the language. I attempt to be correct, but don't put enough emphasis to avoid criticism (I've had some of that on this Forum).

I can now spell original correctly thanks to Carmen, god rest her soul. Origionally I always misspelled it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I am physically unable to type the word "from" without specifically paying attention - I almost always have to go and edit it as it always comes out "form" - It makes me crazy...
