Car 'smells' hot -

I have noticed in the past week or so that the car 'smells hot' after a 15 minute run. Water temp, oil level, wheel bearings and brakes all normal.
I know that this is a very hard question for an online forum, but anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Peter

Can you give a more precise description of the smell?

And do you notice that hot smell is stronger when you're outside the car or inside ?

Hi,
Smell is outside the car, usually noticed as I pull up and exit the car. It appears more from under the car than if I pop the hood. Also, it has the smell of a soldering iron or overheated clothes iron (yes- I do know what one of those smells like!)
Thanks,
Peter

No strange noises? Screeching, knocking, anything at all?

No strange noises at all (and my mechanic reckons I could hear a seagull fart 5 miles out to sea).
Car seems to be running like a bird - touch wood.

Lol, I wonder what such a fart sounds like... Lol, maybe a new topic on that one?
Maybe something got loose and is touching the exhaust? Can you take a peak underneath?

Yes, nothing obvious there either. Anyhow, I suspect the best thing is to run it hot and put it up on a hoist straight away.
I realise this is a hard one, but I get such surprisingly good results from the forum!! It always seems that someone else on the forum has already experienced all of my issues - 968 problems wise that is!!
Cheers,
Peter

Coolant leaks some times have that "hot smell" check to see if your leaking coolant in the vicinity of the exhaust manifold. Check your coolant level when the engine is cold.

Sure it's not hot brakes ? I know you listed them among the " all normal " things , but on those occasions when I run the car pretty hard I recall something fairly close to the hot iron on clothes or soldering smell you described, after I stop and get out of the car. I was informed during one of our annual gatherings that it's almost certainly the brakes.

DS you actually know what a hot iron on clothes smells like. Does that mean you iron your clothes? Please say it ain't so! Smells coming from cars is any interesting topic when we are trying to diagnose our problems. Almost as much as sounds.
Jimmy whisker in agree that results on questions presented on the Forum more often than not come up with right answers!

Describing smells or sounds in writing is difficult enough, diagnosing them based on those descriptions is a hell of a challenge. But there are a few common enough where several owners would have experienced them and can probably take a fairly educated guess at the culprit. Burning plastic smell : 100% of the time it's an empty trash bag or part of a trash bag you ran over which attached itself to your exhaust. :-)

I remember driving from DC to NYC one nite for Chinese when I was in college.Yes I actually did this. As we pulled into the city we smelled smoke. It wasn't the weed we had smoked all the way up. It sort of smelled like paper. I remembered that there were newspapers in the trunk and quickly pulled over. Lo and behold, a rear tail light bulb had somehow become unattached to the lite and was resting against the paper in the trunk. Hot bulb plus newspaper equals fire. I quickly pulled out the burning papers and put the fire out. Then on to Chinese with a canolli in Little Italy. So you're right, some smells are easily distinguishable!

Cannot top that one Rap. I once had to pull my car over when my 70's solid state radio burnt out (not 968.
Anyhow, I am pretty sure that my problems are the dreaded plastic bag - it does seem to be improving over time. Recent battery and alarm/immobilizer failures have made me jumpy I suppose!
Thanks,
Peter

I had the plastic bag on my Benz and it took a while to finally get rid of the smell but it just took time it had melted on exhaust pipe
