Not the furry kind.
I think going through the notes of the PO the cat was removed and a pipe was put in. However this does not look like a aftermarket OEM bypass pipe. Nor does it look like a CAT. Maybe a gutted cat?
Can anyone tell me if this is non-OEM? Or am I just looking in the wrong place. I want to get a cat to put back in.
Thanks!

Certainly looks off to me...not OEM.

Thanks, from cursory inspection looks like someone cut the ends off a cat, and fabed some pipe in between to make it bolt in/out.

Yeah it looks like they probably cut it apart, emptied the contents and welded it back together.

No idea if smog tests are required in MA but if they're not I suspect its just a matter of time before that changes.. I understood that by 2016 all states have to impose standards that are nearly as strict as, if not identical to CA. No cat - no registration renewal when the new rules take effect.

We have some law (according to my inspector) that after 20 years or something, a car is considered an antique, and they do not do emissions checks or ODB check even if the car has it. Only visual safety inspection. I know they used to plug in my 951 and other 944s back in the day (10 years ago) The rational is most cars that old are no longer on the road, so even if they are polluting the newer cars with the stricter regulations offset any pollution from the fewer old ones. Go figure. Mass has some of the strictest emissions laws/goals in the country and only falls behind CA I believe, NY and a few others. We also only contribute about 1.3 percent of the pollution too in the USA
I am glad we don't have the enviro police pulling you over and looking for offbrand bits on your car.
I even asked about my airbag if I removed them and was told if they don't see a light, I will pass.
We used to do the dyno run and tail pipe sniffers, but after ODBII got better with the stage I and Stage II monitoring, I guess they dropped that (dynos) plus no one wanted to foot the bill for SUVs so for a decade non of my trucks with AWD never got dyno'd.
Anyways I am looking to purchase a cat it looks like.
EDIT: Looks like only cars made after 1995 have to pass emissions check, so that coincides with ODBII...

In Pennsylvania I am exhaust "exempt" from emissions testing if I have a proven history of driving less than 5,000 miles/year (which I do in the 968). If new emission standards take effect I will register as a "classic" (20 years) which will give me the same exemption or at 25 years I can register as "antique" which not only means exhaust exempt it means no inspection at all (but I am still liable for safety infractions, i.e. lights out, etc.).
At the moment, I could burn coal in my 968, legally.

But, but they probably put back 80ft/lbs when they torqued all the bolts down, it works that way right

did i mention i hate ( in this case the word hate is synonimous with envy ) all you other states , lol ? in the friggin' golden state unless you have a " Model T " you get no such privileges . ok, not quite that ancient , but the car has to be older than a 1976 model year. not sure if our cars run so clean that they might pass even without a cat, but theyll never pass the visual insopection so clean or not it's a moot point i suppose

i couldn't get it to pass with an aftermarket cat unless i got it REALLY hot. no chance of passing without one at all.

Maybe it is a little wealthier were I live in this part of New England, but you don't see many cars past 15 years or so old around here unless it is a collectors car of some sort. At that age they are approaching beaters status and with the road salt and people not bothering to take care of cars with all the pot holes and poor weather, those cars are usually off the road sooner than later. Not to mention all the winter accidents with sliding in snow into poles, curbs, other cars, houses, etc.
I know in CA it is not unusual to see a 25 year old Honda Accord in great shape tooling around, but up here they do not last that long as a daily driver. I think that is what made some of the logic in the law, that cars that old just are not driven regularly in greater Boston.
Always seemed you could get a feel of disposable income by the cars in driveways in a neighborhood. Some of the wealthy towns have plenty of mass produced cars, probably because they are stretching funds for the 1200sqft 900k home vs the regular 500k 1900sqft home were the school system is 10% worse than a top performing town.
Anyways getting off topic

In Oregon it used to be 20 year old vehicles and you were exempt from DEQ emissions where checking every two years only if you live around Portland. If you live south there is no DEQ. ridiculous in the state that says they are pro environmental, the cars south of here do not pollute but the cars in the North western part of the state do pollute. But Oregon they increased the inspection to 25 years as Oregon needs the money they get from inspections. So thinking that your state may exempt your car today many only be temporary, as they might charge it to a longer time period in order to get more money.
