gears indicator light - question for those with tiptronics -

On my tip, when the shifter is switched to "manual" gear mode , the only way I can get the little light ( which indicates which gear you're in ) to come on is to turn on at least the first setting on the lights knob , so parking lights need to be on.. at the very least. Otherwise, no little red light on the display letting you know which gear is in driving in daylight , lol. Does anyone else here have this electrical gremlin mystery on their car ?

Dan,
I've also been looking through the site for a solution to this problem. I have a '92 Tiptronic. I can't get my dash cluster to display any gear indication in either manual or auto mode unless the lights are on. We're you able to solve this?

I did not look for a solution because it just does not bother me sufficiently to spend a ton of money on this ( I'd have to have a mechanic look into chasing the possible culprit and then fix it , which in light of our cars gremlins could add up to hundreds and hundreds if not more than a thousand + ) Not worth the trouble . It functions perfectly fine, I can shift by feel , so having the light is just a novelty item and when it annoys me or I really need to test certain limits in each gear to satisfy my curiosity , I'll just turn on the parking lights :-)

Dan,
My problem was a fuse. The fuse that runs the clock was blown. Once I replaced it, the indicator light came on with the ingnition switch regardless of tip or manual mode. Weird.

Interesting, but I assume with that fuse blown the clock would also not function.. ? Mine works just fine . Still thinking it's an ignition glitch ; the PO said he had a few issues with the ignition ( I can't remember what it was now but nothing essential - door chime or some other minor stuff like that ) so it's possible it still has a gremlin or a contact problem somewhere in there.

ds - yours is absolutely related to the ignition switch. there is a component in it that is deliberately connected, as leaving it connected resulted in a dead battery overnight. unfortunately it will almost certainly require replacing the switch assembly, as the actual problem is internal.

Your correct in that my clock wasn't working. I rarely look at it and went to update it for daylight savings time. I noticed it was not working, checked the fuse, found it blown, replaced it and all is good with the clock and gear indicator. I'm sorry your fix sounds more complicated.
