Temp gauge range and sensitivity - Racebannon13 - 10-08-2014

Hi All,



So i picked up my 968 this past weekend, drove it from NJ to MD through a downpour when i discovered the driver-side wiper didnt function. Rain-X helped a bit... ( turned out to be a loose nut)





I noticed a few interesting habits the guage cluster displays. Can someone tell me if these are normal for a 968? My old 944 didnt seem to behave this way ( ambient temperature was high 60's for the below scenarios)



Temp gauge:

temp gauge will hover around the lowest hash mark (1/4 mark) in non-highway driving.

In highway driving the temp gauge registers below the lowest hash-mark ( about a milimeter)

extended idling after running ( parking lot) sees the temp gauge go all the way to the 3/4 mark before the fan clicks on, sending the gauge back to the lowest hash mark.



The gauge seems awefully sensitive, and normally cold running (it seems to move frequently.)





Check engine light:



from cold until the engine gets a bit warm, the check engine light stays on. However it doesnt illuminate until the car has been driven a few miles ( havent been able to capture it long enough to blink test ) Does this sound like a warm up rich condition coupled with a failing o2 sensor?

the fans are 2 speed fans. both fans come on at each speed. see if you are getting both speeds. it sounds like the low speed is not working.





re: check engine light



is it the actual check engine light, or the big warning at the top center? if it is the check engine light, it should have thrown a code, and you can find out what that is with a "blink test". the procedure is pinned at the top of this category.

Thanks for the info, i would guess the temp sender plug in the radiator perhaps wouldnt be sending the appropriate voltage to engage the slow fan? I'll have to research.



Its not the exclamation light thats illuminating but the actual "check engine" light. Again i havent had it light up at a time to check the sequence as it tends to happen once im on the highway. Ill see if i can read it out over the weekend.

it stores the codes, so you can still do a blink test to see what it was, even if it isn't lit up at the time of the test.
