Hello from SFO! - bbogert - 01-20-2015

Hello all,

I'm a new member from the San Francisco Bay Area - Corte Madera, CA.  I'm the second owner of my '92 968 Guards red cabriolet that I've had since 2001.  Fantastic car, I love it.

Had a crack develop in the firewall a few years ago, which lead to the clutch becoming increasingly difficult to engage.  When pushing the clutch, the firewall crack would bend a bit requiring a bit more force to push the clutch further to get it to engage full.  S-Car-Go in San Rafael welded it all back up and made it considerably stronger than original so I won't be having that issue again.  Great shop if anyone in Marin is looking for a good place.  No other issues really aside from just standard maintenance stuff.  I have a couple things on the "to do" list this year for the car:

1.  I need to get a new top and window put in.  I didn't know about this forum, and was searching for a 'how to' on how to replace the top yourself.  I'm hopeful someone has done this and posted an article so I can get some guidance on what I'm getting in to.  I haven't been able to find much on the web.  Once my account here is activated fully I'll take a look, but in the meantime if anyone has some direction on this it would be greatly appreciated!

2.  Suspension is pretty tired.  Not surprising given that it still all original and now 23 years old!  So she tends to lean a bit (a lot??!) when going hard in to a corner.  Considering going with the M030.  Sounds like it has a good balance of being a good ride for day trips, but also solid for good performance on track days and/or autocross.  I haven't done auto cross in quite a few years, but I do expect to do a couple year and probably get up to Infineon a couple days a year.  Open to input on this as well!

Lastly, I'm happy to become part of this community that appreciates these fine machines!

Best,

Bren

welcome

re: M030 - there is a lot better stuff out there, for a whole lot less money.  also, there is a reason no cab ever came with M030.  that's not to say you can't put a great suspension in the car.  i did.  the M030 is just not a good match for it.

re: top - this job is not for the faint of heart.  it is a complicated assembly, and if you get it wrong, you bind up the upper bow, and break it.  they are no longer available either.   there is an instruction manual here on how to do it, but i recommend having it done professionally.

Welcome to another Bay Area 968er from the top of the East Bay hills!  Maybe we should have a NorCal 968 gathering this spring to replace the gone-but-not-forgotten annual Paso trip?

Welcome Bren.

Yes, between NorCal and NorNevada we should be able to put together a pretty good group.

I second that motion! I would love to see a group of 968's in the area. I have not seen another 968 in the Reno/Tahoe area in over a year. I know there are a few, but they are never out when and where I am.

Now that Flash has had a year off to rest and recuperate and perhaps as his swan song, he could put together one of his famous events. Probably should get a count before you present this idea to him. He would of course have to fit it into the running of his campaign time!

With one of our daughters, son-in-law and only grand-child living in Escondido, CA, it would not take much to convince my wife to drive down to California in the 968 (as we did a few years ago).

Hello from SFO! - ds968 - 02-06-2015

One of our NorCal members suggested the barbera wine festival in Amador county ( weekend of June 13 -14 ) might be a good venue and opportunity for a get together . I probably won't make it, but if anyone is interested I can ask him to post the details, though someone with near-flash organization skills will likely have to volunteer to work with him ( Ernest ) on coordination of the associated logistics. Any interest ?

How about putting together a weekend of touring craft beer breweries and hitting some great roads in Mendocino/Napa Counties?  There are some great drives to and from the coast and some great vistas to see.  (of course we could still include a winery or two).

Craft beer breweries = Smile

Wineries = Smile

June = Sad

Daughter #3 getting married in June (minimal expense this time round ... groom is only son, so his parents want to bankroll the whole wedding. I am NOT complaining!)
