On my 1995 coupe there are very small thin rubber tubing? between the panels and front bumper which goes across the front. Porsche calls these rubber parts piping. the various piping 7 different part numbers.

944 559 272 00 01C

944 559 273 00 01C

944 559 274 00 01C

If you go to the parts catalogue you can see where this piping goes. According to Sunset (they have all the part numbers in stock $139) in order to install the new by removing the old you have to remove the front bumper to install the one that goes across the front, and side panels and rear panel to install some of the rest.

My question is has anyone actually done the job and do you have to remove all these panels in order to  do the job or can it be done a different way?

yes, they have to come off

be prepared to break some of the clips in the process too

Yeah, what Bob said...

exactly what Bob said

OK so all panels have to come off. But how do you remove them? Special tools needed? Where to find instructions on how to remove them? After removal do you have to paint car?

the front bumper cover removal is here.  the rear cover removal file is missing.  side covers should use a door panel tool for the clips.

Yup I have replaced 2 different ones and it is not to hard to remove front bumper but takes time. I used staples to hold piping in place in front curve

The exploded views in the parts catalogue are also a good starting point to find out where all the bolts, nuts and clips are located. Just take your time and be careful.

what is the purpose of the piping? it is cosmetic or water proofing?

rubber piping coming out - flash - 05-08-2016

economical.  cheaper to put rubber in the large body panel gaps than it is to create panels that actually fit

Well, it can't be " neither " , otherwise they would not be there , LOL , so if the waterproofing aspect is not a factor at all, then it must be entirely a cosmetic reason, in that without them the gap between the panels would probably give the car a weird appearance, I'd think ..

rubber piping coming out - williamoss - 05-08-2016

Well if it is not for water proofing where an absolute fit would be important, but cosmetic, has anyone just tried putting a bead of black silicon instead of the piping. It would be cheaper and I think easier to put in?

rubber piping coming out - az968 - 05-08-2016

I would think that black silicon, while sealing well and easier, would not create a nice clean filling, so the cosmetics wouldn't be good nor probably not as durable.

you guys aren't getting it.  it was pure economics.

remember that this is a 3rd generation car, with little to no chassis reinforcement along the way, yet the mass increased by about 30% and the physics involved more than doubled the stresses on the chassis.

it was too expensive to retrofit the chassis to use body panels that would have smaller gaps, and not rub against each other.  so, they used the rubber.  it flexes and gives to accommodate the chassis issues.  it prevents the body panels from rubbing against each other.  it's not really cosmetic, though i guess without it the gaps would really be ugly.  the ones along the sides of the hood sure are

rubber piping coming out - az968 - 05-08-2016

Right, there were "fit" issues with the rocker panes and front bumper due to design changes.  But, without the rubber piping there would be ugly gaps.  Therefore, the rubber piping was really cosmetic, to fill the gaps.

And also functional ; " prevents the panels from rubbing against each other " .
