Crazy intermittent cruise control - dlearl476 - 06-11-2016

Last year when I drove my car back out west from New York, I noticed a crazy intermittent problem. By the time I got to Utah, I'd been through enough cycles to notice this: every OTHER time I stopped the car, opened the hood (checked the oil), closed the hood and restarted the car, the cruise control wouldn't work. Alternatively, every other time I did the above, it did.

On my trip to Las Vegas last week, it's become a little worse. Well, maybe I can't say that, because the two times it DIDN'T work in succession, I didn't do the hood bit (I seemed to remember it was related to turning the ignition on/off)

So, based on my electronics background, the first thing I'm going to do is contact cleaner/ProGold as many contacts as I can find. Searching through the threads, I'll also clean/inspect all my brake light bulbs. I also need to look at my clutch cut out because AFAIK mine doesn't work, I have to disable my CC before I shift or I quickly hit redline.

Anything else anyone can think of? Hopefully it's not the switch cluster, but it doesn't seem like a switch issue to me.

Yes my cruise control stopped working and my mechanic (Curt the owner) of MARQUE Motors in Portland OR replaced a part in my clutch or a sensor of the clutch. I can not find the receipt now but if your interested give him a call. 503293-5386

Thx Bill. I missed this.

Check the cable uder the hood where it connects to the controller, in front of the battery. Plastic clip that can wear or break.

I had a similar problem with my heater control valve, it would at random times decide to blow out hot air, which was rather unpleasant in the heat of summer. I noticed that this sometimes happened when I bumped the key with my knee, so I experimented with putting the car in neutral and coasting for a second while I shut the engine down and restarted it. Each time I did that, the A/C went back on and the hot air stopped.

I changed the ignition switch out, using a part I purchased from Sunset (don't buy the wrong one, Luke at Sunset knows which one the 968 requires), and the problem went away.

Maybe it has nothing to do with the hood, and it's more related to a flaky contact in the ignition switch. The 968 has several accessory circuits, perhaps one of yours is experiencing intermittent power loss.

I'll put that on the list.

Hi MCL, do you got a partnr for that ignition switch? Thanks.

Crazy intermittent cruise control - MCL968 - 12-18-2016

Hey Philippe,

The correct number is 944.613.024.01. Don't let the dealer try to sell you the replacement 996 switch that will require you to solder the wires on the switch to make it work. It should look like this:

When you get the slotted screws out, replace them with Allen-head screws so you can actually tighten them in the space provided.

BTW, the correct switch through Sunset was actually cheaper than the "wrong" switch through our local Porsche dealer.

Changing the switch made a couple other "strange" problems magically disappear as well. Headlights pop-up every time now, heater does not come on at random times, and the engine feels like it has at least 30 more HP (that last one might be an exaggeration).

Matt

Gracias Señior Matt and Waylander! Sometimes some dash gauges act up and I cleaned every ground etc I could find. The sensors are ok, so maybe the switch is the culprit, as the key has quite some play.

Crazy intermittent cruise control - Waylander - 12-20-2016

Have you cleaned up the two rugby ball shaped brass connections on the rear of the clocks

Also that part is just the switch, not the lock barrel which may account for the wobbly key

Crazy intermittent cruise control - Bulti - 12-20-2016

<p style="margin-left:40px;">Yes I even cleaned everything twice, a few monts in between.  It did wonders on the fuel gauge.  A new sender was only part of the solution.  There may still be a bad ground somewhere, but I can't find it if there is another one hiding.  Or maybe there is a wire acting up.

Mmm.  New lock barrel means a new set of keys right?

Crazy intermittent cruise control - Waylander - 12-23-2016

You can buy number matched barrels but they are twice the price of the random key ones

But I bet it's the same as the door locks, golf mk1-2 tumblers in the locks so you can go buy a couple of those and have a set of spare tumblers to match any key

Crazy intermittent cruise control - Bulti - 12-24-2016

Ok thanks!

Crazy intermittent cruise control - TheLongKhan - 06-12-2017

@Bulti - Any update on this?  Did the ignition switch help fix your cruise issues?

I am working out the discovered gremlins (thus far) and this is curiously similar to my intermittent cruise control issue.

Hoping to leverage my growing "advanced search" skills on guiding me through these gremlins and beyond.  Thank you, thank you.

Crazy intermittent cruise control - Waylander - 06-13-2017

Cruise issues are sometimes the motor in the unit under the bonnet, look for 944 cruise problems on the interweb

Also replacing a few capacitors in the ecu will fix the keep accelerating issues

All the details are on the web
