#7 on the list of top 25 cars for July for market growth.

Not bad for a car many think isn't going to be collectible.

That list has credibility , IMO , right up until the point they included the Chevy NOVA , and the Buick LeSABRE in there .

I just received the current Hagerty price guide May 2016 to August 2016 and the 968's have risen.


1992-1993 Cab $24,500 Excellent. $36,900 Concours

1994-1995 Cab $26,100 Excellent. $38,900 Concours


1992-1993 Coupe $16,900 Excellent. $24,000 Concours

1994-1995 Coupe $17,900 Excellent. $24,600 Concours


All this while the index showed the lowest average price increases since May 2009, noting a market in transition.


Also note, the 944's has been on a significant upward price spiral the last 3 months which must be lifting the 968's as well.

Of interest is the difference between the Cab and Coupe.   In the above numbers, roughly, the Cab is valued at 45% more than the Coupe.  I like the Coupe much better, but I do understand why more people prefer the Cab, especially as the 968 drifts into "keeper" status and therefore perhaps is driven more for pleasure and less for daily / utility usage.

What were the typical MSRP differences ( % ) between the cabs and coupes when these cars were new ?

I think they night have been no more than 20% ?

For instance the 1992 list prices:

Coupe $ 39,850

Cabriolet $ 51,000

That is about 28% difference in 1992 list prices. Could also be more interest for cabs than coupes at present.


All cabriolet Porsches are more expensive than their coupe siblings. Yes that includes the new 718 Boxster over the new 718 Cayman price adjusted by Porsche for 2017.

Not just Porsches , but I think pretty much all automobiles makes / models have the cabs versions priced higher than the coupes . And since convertibles have all but disappeared from most manufactures production lineups for several decades I'd think the demand for them, whether driven by nostalgia or otherwise , commands significantly higher prices ..

There is only one car that I prefer in the coupe version over the convertible. My all-time favorite, the E-Type Jag. The lines of the fastback are just so downright beautiful.

lol, once again I'm going against the grain - to me the E type convertible ( and yes, it is a work of art ) is far more attractive than the coupe .   and this from someone who, in general, absolutely dislikes, and disrespects convertibles     :glare:

Yes, getting older will do that to you. Individual preferences change, or at least lend themselves to more exceptions ; look at Flash - he's driving a friggin' 911 , for heaven's sake !! No need for a shrink though ; I think most, if not all of them, are crazier than their patients .


Looking at the E type coupe I thought : glad tBMW did not make the Z 8 into a coupe , they might have botched those beautiful lines by putting a top on it .

I think both E-types are absolutely beautifully designed cars, well ahead of their time. As for the 968 the Cabriolet is stunning in design and far superior to the Coupe that looks like the 944 from the side. Just my humble opinion. But after saying that, I was a happy owner of a guards red 944 for years.

As to price, my 94 Cab came in at $58000 with all the options. They where so much more expensive to produce because of the conversion (They all started as Coupes) and to that the underbelly re-inforcement.

 

I would even argue that Hagay's design of the 968 Cab is the finest Porsche design ever, but as you know "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

I wish I could argue with you but I have to admit the 968 cab looks less " dated " than the coupe . I also agree that the 968 ( cab or coupe ) is the finest Porsche design ever ...well, until the 918 came on the scene but I hear those are slightly pricier than 968s .

I love the looks of our cars, both coupe and cab! Ds, why would you "disrespect" cabs? Pretty strong language for beautiful cars with a top that goes up and down. Put it up for rain...put it down for sun. What's to disrespect? In any event, as a 20+year owner of a 928, I was so happy to find the 968, as an "alternative" 928 convertible. I would have loved it had they produced that 928 cabriolet, but alas, I found another great car as a result. Don't hate on the drop top, bro!!!

I dunno...just never thought much about a car that's missing a hard roof, it seems "incomplete" , and not a serious automobile , but rather more of a car designed for a sub- 30 mph Sunday drive on the coast, and not much more. I've driven a few of them , from Mustangs to Ferraris , and simply don't like the way they feel compared to even the most benign coupes.
