Octane available at the pump - williamoss - 08-02-2016

I just had to drive from Portland Oregon to Teaneck New Jersey and back, was able to drive about 11 - 12 hours each day making approximately 700 - 800 miles each day on average. I made it a habit when I was down to 1/2 tank to look for a gas station. What I found interesting was there where pumps with 93 octane but they only existed from Ohio and East. I drove strictly on route I84 to route I80. on this dive I took my Dodge Minivan which got an amazing 25 MPG cruising on average of 70-85 miles per hour.

My point was why is 93 octane not available on the West Coast since it was available on the East Cost. Any ideas?

No, but I always wonder why gas is cheaper in the East than here in the Bay Area where much of the gas is produced in our own back yard?

The reason that gasoline is more expensive on the west coast is that there are, as far as I know, no gasoline pipelines to the west coast from the gulf states or anywhere else. With no competition, the oil companies can charge whatever they like. I'm sure that there is some added cost to formulate fuel that meets are stricter air emission requirements. Fuel costs in Hawaii are just as high. All gasoline in Hawaii is locally refined and once again there is no competition.
