Are upper/lower cam chain pads the same? - Harvey - 04-06-2005

I just talked with a dealer who sells just the upper cam tensioner pad...and he says that's all they sell but that several people have bought both and he's not received any complaints ($22 each). But...he says that if I buy the whole tensioner kit (about $800) that the lower pad comes with it.



My question...are the upper and lower pads the same and interchangeable?

The PET is a littlel vague, but they only list one part number. They are both the same.

Yes, PET is vague concerning the tensioner pads. Not only are the pads not included in the exploded drawing, but the description, listed at the end of the part numbers, is "guide piece upper." In all honesty, during my first pass over that section of PET in search of the part number for the pads, I completely missed that nebulous, addended line. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



My understanding is that, technically speaking, the lower tensioner pad for the 968 is actually different from the upper guide piece. (The S2 also uses disparate pads). However, one can elect to use both upper pads on the 968 without incident.



I recently searched extensively for the part numbers to the pads and have verified them doubly. They are:



Upper Tensioner Pad--944.105.509.00



Lower Tensioner Pad--928.105.509.01

If the dealer will not sell you the lower pad, I'm almost certain that Sunset Porsche in Oregon will. Their phone number is 800-311-4858. Also, I just checked Pelican Parts Online Catalog, and they sell it for $16.25. Sunset's price is $11.06. Again, alternatively, you can use the upper tensioner pad as the lower without incident.



P.S.--As an interesting aside, the lower pad used on the 968 is the same pad used as the upper on the S2.

I just replaced the variocam pads and they are both the same part number. I have no reason to believe they were replaced previously.

I ve got a question!!

Is it possible just to change the pads , without taking the chain off?

This in the scenario that the cams and chain. look ok, just as simple maitenance, safe guard.

No. As a matter of fact, the cams have to come out.

I removed my pads yesterday, and both of my pads also had the same part number. Hmm.... I may have been misinformed by the Porsche dealership parts salesman with whom I recently spoke. He said that the actual part number for the bottom pad was the 928 part number, but that many people just used the top pad in both places. Also, why is it that so many have reported that dealerships often tell them that one can only obtain the bottom pad by ordering the complete tensioning unit? Either both yours and my pads have been replaced before, or they really did come from the factory with the same upper and lower pads. The confusion for me has now been reinstated... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
