968 vs. central AC - ds968 - 05-14-2005

I just had an AC installed at the house. $ 9,700. I'm guessing I'll use it about 45-60 days in any given year ( barring a more rapid rapid global warming <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ).

A 968 coupe may be worth $ 18,000, if we're estimating "generously. I use mine 250-300 days a year. And I keep the car's AC on 80% of the time, but conversely, I can't drive the central AC anywhere <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> .



Just one more ( perhaps warped ) way to reflect on the relative value of our cars.. even if it is comparing apples to oranges.

I certainly understand - and empathize - with the logic. I'm a little taken aback, though, at $9,700 for the home A/C. Was this a new install? Really big house? If this is getting too personal, I understand - don't respond.

from 3 quotes that was the middle one, and the company came with very solid referrals from friends.. seemed the way to go.



the house is 30 yrs old and so was the furnace ( on its last leg anyway.. ) -had a new one installed, which added a bit to the total cost. the living space is not huge by any means, just right around 3,000 sq.ft. , but 2 1/2 levels and it's a bit tricky to keep a consistent temp everywhere so we went with a fairly high end CARRIER AC system, add to that labor costs in this area being just plain silly for any type of contractor, IMHO, and you're sort of stuck paying the going rates.



Lucky my mechanic still charges $ 80 / hr, and it's an honest hour that he puts in working on the car - maybe I should have had him install the AC. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Carrier Infinity series - not sure about the 5 ton thing, but yes, it is a dual zone..



Had this house for seven years and did not put AC in until just now because while I love arctic temps, Alena is just the opposite.. but as our son started to complain that it's too warm to sleep some nights and we outnumber her 2:1, she'll just have to buy more sweaters. We didn't have AC in our home in Laguna but an open window on each side of the house the ocean breeze would usually take car or that. However there were a few weeks worth of Hot summer nights that even our ceiling fan and the windows opened would not help. So I purchased a portable AC unit. The one we have is about 4 ft X 2 x 2 verically. It pumps out some serious cold air. 20 min a hot 25"x20" bedroom with 20" cielings was ice cold. I highly recommend the unit which we paid $399 or so at Home Depot.
