I am not thrilled with the sound quality of my cdr-220 with the 10 speaker system. I had an eclipse that sounded much better, but was stolen.

I am thinking about adding a small amp but don't want to blow out the stock speakers. I don't think I want to replace the speakers, because it would cost too much. I may also just replace the the cdr-220 with a nakamichi cd player. However, I want the source unit to look original.

Thoughts or recommendations?

the speakers are a non issue from a clarity standpoint - they may not have the bottom end capability you want though - the amps are weak, but at least they are matched to the speakers

i would look at any deck with a 5 band parametric eq - this is the single most important feature in getting good sound out of a car stereo - alpine makes some nice ones that also have an ipod controller built in

if you feel, after that, that you lack bottom end, you can add a sub pretty easily

I just re-installed all 6 factory door speakers I got new through Sunset ($apprx 180), and I am quite pleased with the sound. They fit, and that makes me happy. Of course I'm running a sub, and yamaha 4 x 6s in the side wells. Next step is to reconnect the amps under the seats and see if I like that better than straight form the head unit. The rears and sub go through a separate amp in the trunk. As flash said, they do have good clarity. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
