Ambient air temp guage is going crazy - Bill - 07-06-2005

My 95 968 CAB ambient air temp gauge is changing from F to C for no reason. Is there a sensor screwing up or is the unit bad? Or is there a demon coming out?

Anyone had any experience?

Thanks

Bill

Mine is doing exactly the same thing for the past year, after years of working perfectly. My only guess is that it is an electrical gremlin that shows up in the thermometer after the passage of time, much like the fact that my horn buttons have oxidized and mostly no longer work. I doubt that the external connections to the thermometer are at fault but I will work them (to clear any dirt or corrosion) if I can find them.

Are you driving back and forth across the border with Canada....or Mexico ?

Wondering if our gauges automatically convert to the local system ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Ok, back on serious note: mine did that for about a week, and just when I was going to have it looked at, it stopped... and has been functioning ok for over a year now. Not sure what to make of it.

The night time illumination goes out on mine sometimes.. any ideas?

Never had it fluctuate thou. (perhaps a button is stuck 1/2 way in?)

The buttons on this gauge seem to be weak. My deg C button in stuck in, so it only reads deg C. Oh, well, I only wish this was my biggest problem...

I never bothered to look, but the light bulb that illuminates ( or, rtaher... should illuminate ) mine has been out since I bought the car. Never cared much what the temp is at night so I forgot it's even there, but I'll have to take a look if it's a simple repair - can't assume anything with Porsche - for some of these gizmos that ostensibly should be easy to replace you have to disassemble half of the car...

My buttons are fine and don't seem to be sticking. I notice that the temperature always reverts back to Celcius when the car is cold and will eventually stay on Fahrenheit once the car is good and warm. However, if I press the F button when the car is cold, I get Fahrenheit for only a few moments before it reverts to Celcius.

As other said, it's a minor annoyance and far from the most important issues. But it would be nice for this thing to work properly.

In my 1990 BMW 5 series I had a Trip Odometer, exterior temp guage F&C, Gas mileage estimator, remaining miles on fuel in tank, all in one display, the thing always worked perfectly. Cripes! We're having problems with a damn thermometer! Sheeesh.

Ok mine just started to do the mysetry switch to the metric system. It happens at each start cycle. Anyone find a cause for this yet?

Ambient air temp guage is going crazy - Dave - 11-27-2005

Mine is stuck on Celsius now as the cig lighter must have shorted. The fuse is cooked and cannot be replaced without blowing up until I replace the lighter (my guess). In the meantime, I get degrees C only.

My best guess is that it is a grounding/connection problem. Mine still does it but it's hardly worth the effort to dig into the dash to figure it out.

Add another member to the Celsius on start list. If I hold the F button in for a short while it stays on F .... till I restate the car? I wondered if this was "normal", but reading these posts I guess it is just old age .... the cars I mean.

Check the fuse for this accessory this usually solves the problem. Dr John

Dr. John was right on with this one.

My temp output was stuck on Celsius. Fuse 11 was blown. Replaced it, and viola!

Ditto. I went through the same dance a year ago. But I kept blowing fuses. Replaced the lighter housing and voila, problem solved - no more blown fuse; all Farenheit all the time (as long as I want it that way).
