Does anyone know what model year Porsche went to transponder keys? That's a key that has to communicate electonically with the engine control computer (ie. Motronic or equivalent) before the car can be started. Before transponders, the physical surfaces on the key blade in the ignition alone allowed it to turn and start the car.
Reason I'm asking ...
pre-transponder Porsche keys with remote lock/unlock capability (probably late 993/early 996 vintage?) communicate with some device (alarm/locking computer??) inside the car to lock/unlock doors, hatch/trunk, etc.
I think a pre-transponder remote locking key and associated device can be used in a 968 to provide factory-style remote locking.

Boy oh boy... - There is something I'd be intrested in retrofitting in to the 968. While others have put other systems in (work arounds) I'd like to see if this one can be performed. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

yeah - i'd love to lose the remote, but only if the key still had all the same functions - i really like the trunk button

Could be a complex wiring job. The early Boxster for example has remote locking built into the alarm computer. If you can get both wiring diagrams and draw lines where this, gozinta that, it might be possible. Lot of work for a Porsche logo key fob.
