Take a look at the pics and tell me if you think the first three plugs might be burning coolant.

The one on the right is #4.

I'm not sure about burning coolant, but judging by the looks of the porcelin insulator, I would say everything looks just fine.

my concern would be the difference between #4 and the rest - do a compression check - if that shows even, i think an injector cleaning is in order

That's what I figured, I just was trying to avoid that! I hate removing those fuel lines...

Perhaps #4 was not seated properly and overheated. I say this because of the dirty threads. It looks like blow-by. Also, try some anti-seize when installing the new one.

If you were burning coolant, the plugs would look VERY clean. They look fine as they sit, in fact, I would reuse them. The additives in fuel make the plugs yellow or amber to brown (in the case of techron).

Things you may do on reinsertion. Mark the plug for electrode tip. Aim the gap for intake valves, or so that the electrode is inshrouded to the center of the chamber. Use the antisieze and tighten 15 degrees.
