a little help for a rookie, please.

i've got a small leak from some kind of sensor in the oil sump. not enough to worry, but enough to leave a drop or two over night. not sure what it is. also not sure if i should order a new one or try and remove, clean, and re-seal it up.

also, it looks to me like there's a drain plug on each side of the oil sump. does anyone know what that's about? is one plug and the other something else?

this sensor that's leaking is located directly above one of the drain plugs. i think on the passenger side, but i'm not sure.

i looked it up on pet, but the diagram of the oil sump only shows it from one side.

That is the oil level sensor that is leaking. 944 101 233 02 is the gasket number.

how did you find that part number? i searched pet for a while.

one last question. do you know what the bolt on the other side of the oil pan is? curiosity is getting the best of me.

Believe me, I don't have all the answers, I just know where to FIND the answers. Kind of like a librarian.

The gasket is in the PET. #40 on the attached document.

I have no idea what the other bolt is for, maybe to drain the oil on RHD cars <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . I know that my early '94 does not have this bolt.

thanks. got it. looked right at it on my computer and didn't recognize it. sometimes those schematics are not too helpful for seeing how things go together!

next oil change, i'll take 'er out and see what i see.

Dave, that other bolt is the oil return for use on the turbo cars, it's a banjo bolt

On the PDF, there are two "temperature sensors" ... items number 29 and 30 in the parts list ... any idea why two? They look to be in close proximity to each other. Does that mean there's actually only one sensor but two different parts numbers were used?

ds - totally gross! but funny.

tom - i'm guessing you're talking about the coolant temp sensors? there are definitely two and they are different. i just had to replace mine.

some of the experts here could explain the difference, but i think one goes to the gauge in the dash and the other goes to the brains in the car somehow.

I think Brian is right, that's my understanding also. The one will produce a fault code that needs to be read with the Bosch "Hammer". Mine did, tried cleaning the contacts, a week later "check engine" light was on again.

About $30 at the local dealer, in stock on a Saturday morning! Thank you Porsche for keeping some of these parts VERY available.

It's kinda funny. I have one dealer, very nearby, charges only the highest prices, never has anything on hand, not open evenings or Saturdays.

There's another, 30 miles away, charges much lower prices, has a lot of odd things on-hand, open Saturday mornings until 1PM. Their parts guy will wander out into the parking lot and help you screw bits together on the spot. Very nice!

It might be worth pinging a couple of dealers in the area if you have them. There must be 5 in Chicago area.

funny you mention that, i'm going to check out another dealership today. i've got one near work and one near home. the new one got the part in overnight and didn't even charge me. i might be having a change of heart!

i was in chicago a year ago. bought a vw touareg from cruise car company. i was very impressed after doing a bunch of research how competitive car prices were in the chicago area. must be a better car town than what i had imagined. being from detroit, i just assume we're the best. you know what that does....

I'm about to install that very gasket, which Brumos' parts manager tells me will go in the mail tomorrow. I assume it goes on without any gasket sealant. Also, is there any problem with simply unbolting the protective metal bracket that shields the oil level sensor? I'm missing a pan bolt up under there and will replace it when I do the gasket. I would think you would also want to drain the oil somewhat too.

The gasket probably should go on dry. If you are inclined to use a sealant, try some Hylomar. It is impervious to oil and gasoline. RTV would NOT be recommended. It just can't take being continuously soaked in oil.

The shield is held on by 2 bolts that go onto the block and a tab that is attached by one of the oil pan bolts - just to make things difficult. You may be able to remove the two upper bolts and just loosen the oil pan bolt and swing the cover out of the way. Unless that is the pan bolt you are missing, then you already have the cover 1/3 removed. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Mine showed no sign of sealant being used on it.

Since you're right there, it is probably a good time to do an oil change.
