Fooling the Air Bag - Tom in Austin - 03-08-2006

Hi All, I'm getting ready to start some electrical mods that will require removing airbag, instrument cluster, etc. I anticipate reconnecting the battery at some point with the airbag out, and I believe the airbag ECU will then register a fault and turn on the dash warning light when I'm finished and have everything back together.



Is there a way to outsmart it and prevent the ECU from knowing that the airbag was out? Alternatively, is there a reasonable way to reset the light without taking the car to someone with the "tool" and paying to have it reset?



I think in some past thread about deactivating the airbag when changing to a non-airbag wheel, there might have been mention about using a resistor or something between the airbag contacts to fool the ECU into thinking it's still there. Has anyone actually done this?

Jumpering the air bag connector with a 3 ohm resistor does work. It simulates the resistance of the ignitor pill. It will keep the light from coming on, but if the light does come on, currently the only way is to have it reset by someone with a diagnostic computer.



Someday someone may figure this one out as a home brew reset.
