exhaust blowing black dots on pavement - Brian - 03-29-2006

when i let the car idle for a few minutes, i notice the typical moisture on the pavement behind the exhaust. but i'm also noticing black dots in the moisture. is this a common symptom of something wrong? could just be some carbon build up from the exhaust tip getting wet with condensation from the heat and then falling to the ground. but i'm not sure if it's something more? my exhaust tip does build up with black dust quickly.



normal? internal oil in the system? just carbon?



any advice appreciated.



i do have a small oil leak on the drivers side of the engine where the oil pan ties in with the block.

i have noticed that i seem to get a lot more condensation with my new exhaust - it too spews carbonized water out for the first minute or so - i'm guessing it's the new cat not catching it - it's not new carbon, just water carrying it out now - i am theorizing that the condesation used to stay in the tube, get hot, and come out as steam with the exhaust, whereas now, it takes longer to get hot, so some of it comes out condensed

This thread really intrigued me, so I checked my car yesterday and found that the exhaust is blowing Polka Dots that sorta look like little M&M's, doesn't matter if it's hot or cold, while this morning after a diet high in fiber it appears to be "blowing cookies" in the garage that kinda look like oatmeal. I'm gonna check my exhaust tip after I clean up the garage and get back to you'all with my findings

if you have kids, maybe they stuffed their breakfast cereal in the tail pipe <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



polka dot m&ms and oatmeal symptoms are .... just too weird.. now I'm really curious what in the world can cause that.





occasional moisture noticed below the exhaust here as well, but it's clear water.

Based on your suggestion, I checked with the wife and the kids ate a nutritious breakfast of fruit flavored Pop Tarts this morning, so your theory blaming the kids for the mess has not proven itself. I did venture bravely into the garage again this afternoon and the stench overcame me before I realized I had walked into what I'll call "tailpipe splatter" which has now covered 80% of the garage floor and has left a nice "skid mark" from the still dripping tailpipe on the garage door. Not realizing it, I walked into the splatter in stocking feet, yuch!



This caramel colored mess has an acrid smell and curiously contains some chunks similar to what you might find in an Olive Garden salad. Once I manage to catch my breath and chase the neighborhood cats, who are somehow attracted to this goo, out of my garage, I will attempt to check the fluids in my car to determine how this mess evolved.



I think I'd trade my current situation for the "black dot" syndrome without hesitation.

have you been using bio diesel instead of gasoline?

maybe it's corn chunks?
