On my way home on the freeway my car suddenly surges a little then goes back to normal  then a few minutes later cuts off in middle of freeway

after a few tries it starts back up but after a few minutes dies again

I crank the  engine a few  it stumbles a lot but a few tries starts back

any suggestions

when starting the car it stumbles  a few times before starting up

DME relay or DME relay fuse connection

First thing I might try (to keep it cheap) is switch out the dme relay and see if it goes away. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Sounds like a fuel starvation or contamination thing to me, but that just my 2 cents worth.

Looks like Flash beat me to it..For someone who wants to be free of this site he is "johnny on the spot"

lol - just waiting on the moving company meeting at 9, and had a few minutes to check in.  a lot of that kind of thing these days.

high confidence factor that it's the DME Relay - my car had exactly those symptoms many years ago and changing the DME relay resolved them immediately .

agreed.  i had mine do that on the way home from cleveland when i first bought the car.  it would shut off every few hours, and then reset and run again.  a real pain in the butt.

Don't call Flash Johnny, call him Danny Boy

THAMKS THATS WHAT I THOUGHT ALSO

Not eliminating the possibility of a clogged fuel filter either - as Ryan posted above - but the DME relay is a lot easier ( and a much cleaner job ) so best to start there , because even if it isn't the problem , it WILL go bad at some point so always good to keep a spare in the car . But surges, stalling / stumbling when coming to a stop, or shutting off and then restarting without without rhyme or reason tends to be classic DME Relay symptoms in our cars .

I finally got the new relay drove it and the same thing happened a surge in the car and it cut off this time it started up soon without any problem

drove it a few miles and it cut off again one a few years ago my speed sensor gave out on me

could this be the same thing

Try this and see if it shows anything..

If it surges and dies, that sounds like what's called "lean surge" caused by a failing fuel delivery system. If you have tach response when cranking, then I would check your fuel pump. If no tach response, one of the sensors is dying. Check the connections first, since they are often baked and falling apart.

Also, not all DME relays are created equal. Use a known good one to troubleshoot first.

did the blink test it says oxygen regulator

would that cause it

No I don't think it would, but you can unplug it, the connection jus to the right of the oil filler laying horizontal

Actually Oxygen Regulator could be on the intake side. Check for any leaks in the rubber boot, the hoses, also I'd suggest getting some mass airflow sensor cleaner and cleaning your MAF. There are two oxygen codes one for the sensor and regulator, I have had the regulator code when I had a large leak post MAF. It could also be an old code, so it might be worth clearing it and see if it comes back.
