Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - Etnier - 04-27-2006

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_968

...someone with an agenda has been in there editing the 968's description to minimize the progress the 968 represented from the 944, and to compare it unfavorably to the Cayman, among other things (they have to call the Cayman a 'successor' to the 968 to pull that slight-of-hand off)...

I did some work on that entry perhaps a year ago: it's all changed now. I don't know much about Wikipedia but I sure would like to see a more neutral article in place. Why someone would make such an effort to, in effect, derogate the car is beyond me. I don't feel I have the comprehensive knowledge required to write a proper article to replace what's there, but it would be nice if someone did.

bastards!

I tried once to link the 'Shark' entry to a nickname for the Porsche 928. Didn't get it to stick.

good lookin out Etnier although I dunno much about Wikipedia

which is another reason why I don't believe 90% of the stuff I read on the Internet...

this is a debate I have with my college-aged kids who think Wikipedia is terrific. My point is that there is not necessarily any real scholarship to what is posted there and it is completely open to other agendas. I would never use it for anything.

My kids point is that it get's subject to the review you just made of the article and that is supposed to provide a check/balance. I just think that is a bit too random and subject to the chance checking by someone who knows about a topic.

Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - Etnier - 04-29-2006

wikipedia is collapsing. I read an article in today's paper about how politcal operatives are going in and modifying posts to further their employer's agendas.

Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - Beachboy - 05-01-2006

Nothing new there. Sounds like most of the major media today.

Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - Etnier - 05-25-2006

I have been gently massaging the entry back into shape, and I think things are better. Pulled out the Cayman/Boxster rambling, added details about the power train, the move to Zuffenhausen; corrected a minor error or two- that kind of thing.

What's kind of funny is, if you look at the history, now someone's trying to add the entire PorscheUniverse forum* in as a noteworthy 968 link, and someone else keeps tossing the links back out.

*PorscheUniverse is a new forum with little participation and only 8 968 entries: not yet worth listing in the Wiki, unless you think we should immortalize Flash's "I have to keep in mind that [the 968] isn't a sports car". <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

any way of tracking who is doing the changing? seems like a real pain to have to go back in and fix stuff like that

lol - nah - leave that out - that's just my particular read from my perspective - plenty of people would say this is a sports car, but then, they probably haven't driven a real one (mostly too young)

anyway, i'm not the originator

from memory from an old scca handbook (i even found this on a t-shirt):

definition of sports car: a small, lightweight, 2 seat convertable (most often red) with no intrinsic value whatsoever beyond plastering permagrin on the face of the driver, as he rips through a canyon, hanging on for dear life

anyway - good luck getting that thing fixed again - hope it sticks - would be nice if it stayed stable, nuetral, and accurate, and i know you put a fair amount of work into it

Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - Graham - 05-26-2006

Flash,

You are right, the 968 is not a sports car at all by definition.

The Coupe is a coupe or GT (if you push it) and the cabriolet is a cabriolet

Sports car - 2 seats and no roof

However, seen as though my mothers MG midget is classed as one then I don't mind the fact that it is not!

Great job, John, we appreciate your effort to keep the record accurate!

Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - flash - 05-26-2006

graham - lol - i get that - there is a pretty sizeable list of such cars - great fun to drive though (when they are running)

Someone's dicking around with the Wiki - Graham - 05-26-2006

Flash,

It is a cool little car - chrome bumpers and wire wheels

but I can't even fit in it so I hate it! (with a large pinch of salt)

roflmao - i am now remembering one of the guys who used to race one - the top of his head was well above the windshield

ok - i need to stop reminiscing
