I used the stuff that Pete lent me to run two bottles of induction cleaner through my white car as per the demo at Newtown. ALso used the gas treatment and have driven the car 300 km since. Car runs MUCH smoother and idles a lot better. Still knocks above 4000 rpm so I am going to examine the ECU and chip tomorrow. Should be able to have something on this tomorow evening. Here's hoping I find something helpful in the lastest investigation.

I second the sentiment. Pete did mine last week prior to the Celebration. It seemed like i was driving a different newer/less mileage 968. Engine note was less gravelly and smoother with a nice exhaust bark now too. Top end seems to have opened up the more I drove it.
Kim, i did notice that the more i drove, things kept on getting better and better. Maybe you just need some more mileage after the cleaning? I dunno just a thought.

The induction cleaning method is called Run Rite.

Pete at RS barn strongly reccomends it. It cleans the carbon from the valves and helps the engine run smoother. It is only available professionally and costs between around $69 to $89 depending on the products used.

Well, well, well.
I need the advice of Flash and Pete here.
My ECU labels are - Bosch 0 261 203 070, 944.618.123.01, TYP 668 MW-02
The chip is a Performance Products chip (can supply the number later but it was hard to read from the photos sent to me from the shop). I think I should go to either the RS Barn chip (Pete, will yours work on this ECU?) or back to original (Flash, what do you think?). If I go to an new chip the old one is to whoever will pay the shipping to get it.
Clearly, I could probably run induction cleaner through by the gallon without solving the knocking problem.
actually, those are both late DMEs - the part number you are looking for to tell is 0261.203.070

you have the late dme - you can use just about any major brand chip - pete's will do very nicely - i whole-heartedly recommend it, as it outperforms all other chips - it also has the additional upgrade trade-in feature, if you ever decide to go further into modification
as for the perf prod chip, to my knowledge they didn't make one of their own - over the years, they have sold the weltmeister, and perhaps the autothority - either one, if for the correct DME, work fine, though not as well as some others

Looks like they sell to the general public now.

i don't understand - perf products has always sold to the general public - by "they" do you mean run-rite? that would be cool

New updates.
Chip is labeled as Autothority Per Eng
PO 968.1.100.30
SN 2003
1995
Can anyone offer a guess as to whether this chip and ECU combo are my problem? I will replace it if it will help. I can't get gas up here better than 92 octan and if the chip is designed for 93 or better I might be best using a stock chip. Everything contibues to point to the car being raced by the PO. I don't.

I went on the run-rite web site and submitted my E-Mail address and zip code to find the nearest location. This was on Monday and i still have not seen a response. Guess I will have to make a trip to Pete's place this summer. I wonder how active this service is? Anyone else tried?

kim - should not be a problem - that chip is a different number than the ones i have from them, but appears to be correct per the label - i would contact autothority directly to find out for sure
in any case all chips should run on 91 with no issues at all, though they may put out about 3% less power
cosimo - same experience here

So, Flash, are you saying that my knocking problem continues to lie elsewhere?
Induction cleaning -
flash - 05-24-2006
i'd grab a stock chip for a test, just to be sure, but yes, i think it is probably elsewhere
i would call autothority first, and make sure the application is correct - then, try a factory chip
you may well find that it is the DME itself

[post="21579"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Cosimo: I did exactly what you did and it took a couple weeks to find a suitable Run-Rite location. Wound up being over an hour from me. Many Sears auto service centers are Run-Rite facilities, but they
won't touch the 968. It's a bunch of crap. This from Run-Rite:
Quote:I found out the reason that SEARS won't do a Fuel System Cleaning on your vehicle.
It is listed as having a ZF Transmission. The warning says-
Many normal
service procedures, such as fuel system servicing or a simple emissions
inspection, require raising the engine RPM and holding it there. As you may
already be aware, this can damage certain automatic transmissions, causing
them to overheat and push fluid out the fill tube or vent.
This condition has been linked specifically to transmissions made by ZF.
Unfortunately there are two important variables involved in identifying the
vehicles affected:
1. Several auto manufacturers have used ZF transmissions over the years
2. While only some of the ZF units are susceptible to this condition, no
one has been able to identify which ones.
Of course I have a Getrag 6-speed. This didn't help me when I called Sears on this: they moved into fearful CYA mode.
The only other local source Run-Rite had listed was a quick-lube joint which claimed they'd never heard of Run-Rite.
After quite a lot of back-and-forth, I wound up one state over in a Midas shop.
I would email
susan@run-rite.com
directly. She did stick with me for quite some time there, and eventually found me a shop.

I had the same experience, so I just emailed susan@run-rite.com per John Etnier's recommendation. Hopefully this will work.

I did call run-rite and they gave me some locations in the DC area including Sears. However, in speaking with a Midas shop I was not convinced they could do a Porsche must less a 968. I really don't want to take it to someone fumbling around try to find the vacuum line. So, I guess it's a trip to RS BArn this summer.
