As I got out of the car today and closed the door , the side view mirror glass fell off. It hit asphalt but surprisingly did not break. So I'm planning to glue it back on to what looks like just a smooth plastic surface to which it adheres , but what glue should I use ? Any superglue / krazyglue, or gorilla glue , or what ?

Black weatherstrip cement would also be a possibility.

whatever is used needs to dry very hard. otherwise, the mirror will shake.
the last time i did this, i replaced the mirror, complete with the plastic backing, for about $40. extremely easy to change. no mess with glue. no worrying about getting it exactly the right spot. removal is done from the bottom of the housing, through a little hole, using a very small screwdriver to rotate the locking gear

Ah, good to know - I'll glue the mirror for now ( I actually have glass super-epoxy at home ) until I can order the part and then change the assembly .

just make sure you don't get any glue on the locking mechanism, or you won't be able to remove it

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. Here are some notes and pictures when I needed some help from the guys:

This is your blue car, right?

Hahaha, no, not the blue car, but the cursed tiptronic one, where practically everything else has broken down, except the side view mirror..until yesterday .
Thanks Roland, that will come in handy when I replace the assembly

Same thing happened to me a few years back. I wrote in and Flash told me that on the bottom of the Mirror holder is a hole. I think by memory it is an Allen key but it could be a screw driver. When my mirror fell out it smashed into a 100 pieces. I think that once you get out the mounting point it was very easy to apply the glue so nothing else got any glue on those other places. I got my mirror from Sunset. Perhaps they sell the glue separate.

my mirror keeps shaking when driving would I need to re-glue or do I need a new unit?

Is it the glass that is shaking while driving, or the housing

I think it is just the glass if I put my finger on the glass it will stop shaking. Would that just require glue then? were would I glue it? thanks

As you can see, there are a lot of things that can come loose and cause the mirror to shake lol

Jay, if these cars were inexpensive to buy and cheap to maintain, why, anybody could own one. They'd be built just like a Camry. Then people wouldn't know you were wealthy. :whine:

Jay, you beat me to it ..that was exactly my first thought when I saw this . I think I posted this adage in another thread somewhere but I'll repeat it :
Engineers : if it doesn't break , it means it's properly engineered so do t fix it .
German engineers : if it doesn't break , it means it doesn't have enough components..add more !!
