Mechanic in Los Angeles?? - mrouah - 07-26-2006

Anyone know an HONEST, solid and affordable mechanic for my 1992 968 in Los Angeles? Just moved to West Hollywood. Thanks!

Though a late post to this thread, I too am in Los Angeles and would love the rec of a good Porsche mechanic/shop, preferably one reasonbly oriented to track set up (DE.) Just picked up my 1993 M030 in Detroit after a 6 month search.

Also, those shops to avoid would be much appreciated. I am near Santa Monica (Sunset Blvd. and 405.)

hmmm - sounds like a reason for another gathering

I have some people to visit in LA - and the trauma of my clutch tearing apart on 101 is slowly fading. . . so yeah how bout a socal funrun in the mid term?

We can welcome aboard the Synchro guy too.

Hmm, I thought there was talk about compiling a list of both good and not-so-good and posting it online for all to see...[?]. Perhaps that was another forum[?].

Mechanic in Los Angeles?? - flash - 09-26-2006

i don't know about anybody else, but while i may talk about a shop in person with somebody, i won't publish anything negative about any shop - (not even the ones who have cost me a LOT of money in bad or misdiagnosed repairs)

on that note, i do have a list of l.a. shops that i would NOT go to, that i would discuss in person, at least to the relation of my experience with them

Mechanic in Los Angeles?? - tom968 - 09-27-2006

It's commendable not publishing anything negative about a mechanics

shop on-line. Although, with only about 1500 members I don't think

it would make a difference.

I've used Eurosport in Burbank in the past. It's a small two man shop. The

owner works on cars himself, which is a rarity today. The other

mechanic owns a 944, so they know the cars inside out.

There isn't an affordable Porsche shop that I've ever heard of <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

try trw in north hollywood

Mechanic in Los Angeles?? - S_Cal968 - 10-25-2006

Has anyone compiled a list of "recommended" independent mechs in the L.A. area..?

I can understand some being uncorfortable discussing a negative experiences - you never know who knows who... However if they provide good service the shop has nothing to worry about.

Thankfully I do most of my own work - there's only 1 shop in my area and they may not have 968 experience.

Mechanic in Los Angeles?? - flash - 10-25-2006

lol - yeah - so far, not a lot of success

i have heard about swiss motors being good (from howard), but have zero personal experience with them

foreign sport in santa monica is probably one of the best shops in the country, and i did use them once for a very difficult diagnosis (quite successful where 3 other shops had failed) but you will be waiting quite a while for an appointment - claudio is just that good - a tour of his shop though is little like walking through a museum - amazing cars there

while i haven't used them myself, auto gallery has a great shop, and the ferrari side will make you dizzy with all the gorgeous cars (some ferrari race cars too)

there are no less than 4 independent shops, and 2 dealerships, that some of us have tried, that have resulted in seriously screwed up jobs - the stories are ugly, and not fit for public print - i'd be happy to discuss this on the phone though with whomever

Added this post to the main mechanic recommendations thread but figured it would help here as well:

West LA - Between Venice and Washington right by the 405. This guy knows this car. Just had timing and bal shat belts changed (plus water pump, thermostat, etc). He called to tell me that the previous bal shaft belt was installed off by one tooth, and that the previous thermostat (which I had installed last Nov at AutoWerkStat in Manhattan Beach) was also done incorrectly with the wrong seal so it wasn't seating properly. The car now runs cooler, quieter and smoother, and maybe it's just in my head, but I swear it feels quicker too. Don't expect cheap (today's bill: $2433 - also included VarioCam inspection - which he took pictures of for me - compression check, oil change and crankshaft seal replaced) but expect it to be done right. He used the Gates belts and distilled water to replace the coolant. Solid, German dude.
