Tire advice - sheehanj - 08-12-2006

OK, so I need one new rear tire (16" wheels). All were replaced 9/2000, 20K miles ago. I know I should replace both, all 4 actually but let's stick with the rears for now.



I'm not a particularly aggressive driver: no DE, track, autocross, just sunday-afternoon-top-down drives, so what is the forum's recommendation for replacement tires?

There a several very good tires out there. I went with the recommendation from Car & Driver magazine's performance tire comparison test from their December 2005 issue - the Goodyear F1 GS-D3. They picked it because of its overall capability in both dry and wet. I love the tread design, too. They also have a very good wear rating, and they're less expensive than most comparable tires.



I would recommend getting a wheel alignment right after you replace the tires. I hadn't done this on previous cars, and found out too late that improper alignment caused my new tires to wear out thousands of miles before their time. I got a very elaborate and expensive 4 wheel alignment/corner balance, which I wouldn't recommend unless you're going to track the car (I just did my first DE). But I will say that in my case, before the new tires/alignment, my car had a vicious throttle-induced oversteer, which is now completely gone. The car is really a joy to drive now. Good luck.

I second the wheel alignment...really makes a difference. 4 new tires makes an even bigger difference!!



I went with Toyo Proxes T1R...similar tread pattern to the Goodyear and I have a Toyo dealer across from my office who gets me in and out at a fair price.



According to Toyo, new/better compound than the T1S which was a pretty popular tire. These T1Rs are pretty sticky and although I'm street only, like to test out on-ramps and double yellow lined corners whenever possible. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
