I am considering doing the small air flow upgrade on the air box. Basically drilling the 4 large holes in the front air box. It was recommended to insert rings in the holes for better flow. Why is it better with the rings and where do I find them?
I installed a K&N filter in my old 944 but didn't notice any difference. Is it really worth the money?

I used audio speaker ports that you can easily find online. The smooth curved surfaces contribute promote undisturbed airflow whereas a simple drilled whole results in a disrupted air flow. If you do this mod, remove the snorkel as well. You'll notice the power difference and the induction howl is a nice added feature.

I used intake horns from a Suzuki, per Matt's mod to the mod.
Looks more cool.

the K&N is responsible for a little less than half of the 11.8 hp increase i saw when i did the airbox mod dyno testing.
it is important to make sure you do not overoil the filter

I meant velocity stacks. Maybe a little more power than the rings but no data to verify. Yes, over oiling the filter screws up the MAF.

It's a done deal. Worked all day on this and finally came up with a solution. Two large holes on each side capped with a seat ( the one used in office tables to guide the wire down to the computer) to make a smooth airflow. Snorkel still in, will play with that. When it is time for a filter change I will take my chances on a K&N.

I am quite sure that this modification works best with the snorkel removed.

Correct, the snorkel should be removed.
Now you are ready for a chip
Slippery slope, here you come...

I did the chip, exhaust, and the air box mod. Done for now. Next is suspension and brakes. Car is a lot more fun to drive, but the increase in power, however slight, makes the weaknesses of a twenty-five-year-old suspension glaringly obvious.

Ok Guys, snorkel coming out. Any tricks in removing it?

I think that it simply pops out. I don't recall that it is bolted in anywhere. Lift the hood, give it a little tug and you will see what is keeping it in place.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Snorkel is out. I can feel the difference. Next step is to install K&N filter.

and then M030 sway bars, hemispherical drop links, change out coils and shocks, strut brace, under carriage brace, 944 turbo caster blocks...S/S brake lines, proportioning valve, cast drilled rotors, big reds, short shift kit...yada yada yada....
LOL,

Oh no, the yada, yada, yada is worth $10k at least

Jay forgot the audio enhancements and covering every surface with Dynamat before adding the new speakers, amps, and Nav unit.
Seriously though, I found the lower suspension brace and strut tower brace made a big difference, and the chassis brace (roll bar) also dramatically altered the characteristics of the car. The short shifter is cool, but I never had a big issue with the shifter anyway. More importantly make sure the lower nylon pivot and the bushings are good. I discovered that was the real problem with my stock shifter when I installed the D1R short shifter.
And changing to 17's was also a good move, but Kaj's car has that covered, so the next thing is the RS Barn chip and maybe an exhaust upgrade. Flash has a post in here on how to do the exhaust in a more affordable manner. Might be worth taking a look at, the exhaust is a very simple system.

May as well do the header if you're buying the cat back. The header adds real torque and horsepower

What can you do to the headers?, I've done the chip, airbox, struts, brake lines, disc & pads....etc etc...?
Air box modification -
94SilverCab - 06-30-2017
Header is not a modification, it is a replacement from a well known secondary supplier...

I've read ( somewhere on this forum, I think ) that ceramic coating of the headers can also improve HP a little ?
