Newbie Intro - '93 968 Coupe Tip - 968Syncro - 09-22-2006
Hello All,
Thanks to all of you for all the great information, and those legacy members from 968.net!
Here she is: '93 Coupe, Tip, Silver ext. Grey Interior. The only thing not stock is the window tinting. This car is exceeding my expectations by a long shot. I had admired 968s some years ago, but were still very pricey. After considering some alternatives, I went down the classic Porsche path again.
The longer story: A 911 SC was my daily driver the last 10 years, about 290K miles, engine was never opened. It is true what Bruce Anderson said, that the SCs are bullet proof - up to a point. Then a cam chain ramp failed, a valve made friends with a piston, and after lots of options decided it was time. (Seats, carpet, lots of other stuff quite worn).
Previously I drove a 924 Turbo for 7 years. Very nice car, but had to install a Turbo every 2-3 years -- never again.
So, like my user name, the 968 came with the 4-wheel drive option called the Syncro. (Ha! did I get anyone's attention). Actually my other car and love is an '89 VW Vanagon Syncro (www.syncro.org, also Silver). These are great vehicles, so the combination of the 968 and the Syncro is just a perfect setup.
Got the '968 locally here in San Diego, Coupe, Silver and Tip were very, very high on my list of requirements. I've had it about 3 months, but never had the time to write everyone. Have done some fixups, but still needs dashboard redying, drivers seat learther panel replaced, and I broke the power mechanism on the sunroof (or it failed, just stopped working with the roof off). And small stuff: the instruments lights (like it has been discussed here), the central storage cover is warped, glove box flap, etc.
Anyway, that is the story, in San Diego North County in case anyone would like to meet for coffee. I'd love to meet others.
Discussions I may search for, add to, or initiate elsewhere:
- The Tip seems to shift real early, it lugs the engine in 3rd a lot going up hill.
- Dashboard re-dyeing.
- rear compartment side storage cover flaps are sagging, would like to stiffen them
- Which drives better: 911 or 968. Answer both. For me the 911 SC is the closest thing to a street legal go-cart. But now I definitely prefer smooth and refined, more speed, and don't miss the noise, smell, leaks, bumps. I really miss being one with the car, but perhaps that will come some more with the 968.

Welcome aboard! You might want to try to drive the tip a bit harder. There are 5 (I think) maps that the computer chooses based upon driving style. One of them is very economy oriented. If you step on it a bit it should shift a lot later. Or, as I do, drive only in the manual mode.
I also had a Syncro - a 1992 Passat that was apparently only available in Canada. It was a lot of fun and a really good year-round car. It had the G60 engine and I did the pulley and chip thing to make it a bit quicker.

Thanks Sean! I would like to meet up with some of you when there is an event. I am really starting to love this car -- similar to another post, when I walk away from it in a parking lot, I always glance back and get a feeling of ahh! Last weekend I drove back from UCLA sliding down 405/5 at 75-80+ the whole way. It was nice! I'll keep an eye on the events board I guess.
