RS Barn - 03-15-2007
RS Barn has just received PCA approval for their Single Mass Lightweight Flywheel.
It is 18lbs vs 17.5 for the original unavailable Motorsport flywheel. BTW Dual mass is 30.5lbs
Flywheel replaces stock Dual Mass using stock pressure plate and disc.
Lists for $879 vs $2K for original. There is a waiting list.
First batch arrives Monday.
All flywheels are numbered and come with Certificate of Authenticity for PCA club racing.
Flywheel also works well in street trim. Very smooth vs other lightweight flywheels. Slight decel vibration at 2K but otherwise acts/sounds like stock Dual Mass

Congrat's Pete!
That's great news...I'll have to wait for next season as I've tapped out the cookie jar...But it sounds like a winter '07~'08 project.

VERY EXCITING, Pete. While I'm not in need of it now, put me on the end of the list and I'll see when I get to the top.

CRAP!
I just got a DMF and disc. Have it scheduled to go in on Friday.
I thought that the stock p.plate and disc would not work.
Pete.
Pictures, please. Nice work. Congrats to flash and Pete!
Oh, well. At least I got the braided line and a new slave and master cylinder.

Hey Pete,
This is fantastic news!
Sorry I haven't been able to keep up to speed with this project, but I did grab a few pics the last time I was in...maybe I'll get a chance to post them this weekend.
I (almost) can't wait for my DMF to fail ...
Regards,
Jay

Excellent, but too late for this season for me. My cookie cookie is enpty too. Winter '07-'08 sounds right. If I get on to the waiting list in September, would I have it for November/December?

Outstanding Pete! Too bad I have a Tip, otherwise I'll be putting my name down. How about a chip and an extra gear for the Tip?

What are the real world experiences with something like this in tandem with a lightened crank in a road/track car? Do you lose out some tq?

I feel the weight is ideal. I've driven with a 12lb flywheel and while it wings up even quicker it doesn't have that torque feel this one does. Mine also has a good feel on decel. Great for track.
No wonder Porsche descided on this weight for their original Motorsport piece.

I finally got mine installed. Wow, what a hoot! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
Thanks, Pete.
Thanks, Bob.

Good job! Add my name to your waiting list since I will be replacing my dual mass flywheel next time the clutch has to be replaced. The original clutch was replaced at 55K by the second owner and I now have 151K on that clutch. sure does seem to be holding up good! Bob Blackwell.

I have read in a couple of posts about oil pickup tubes failing with bad results. Could the additional vibration from this flywheel exacerbate this problem? IIRC the failures have been limited to race cars so far.

it's not a vibration per se - while there is a bit more buzz in the shifter (very minimal) the issues are really in the transaxle
while i cannot say this for certain, and i only have 25k on mine, as long as you balance the entire assembly, you should not have issues
it is possible, but i'm not inclined to automatically link one problem to the other, given that so many people are running the fidanza flywheel with no such issues, and the extra weight of the rs barn unit should reduce the chance of such things
that being said, i plan to reinforce the pickup when i have reason to pull the pan

A failing dual mass fw is more likely to cause the pickup tube failure. I'd venture most of the cars that had the failed pickup were running the dual mass. If they were PCA race cars then they should have been running the dual mass (at least until this year). I've had a fidanza for over 5 years w/o a problem associated with it.

Thats reassuring. Is there a commercially available reinforced pickup available, or is it a do it yourself thing?
