AOS hose (from AOS to throttle) - FRporscheman - 06-27-2007

The AOS hose on my mom's 968 is soft and squishy. I think the rubber is spent. Oh yeah, and there's a nice fat hole in it from rubbing against the manifold. SOO I went to order a new one... Can't find it on Pelican or Paragon. Called my local parts guy and he said it's a dealer only item. Then I called the local dealer and they said it has to come from Germany, 1-2 weeks. They said there's only one dealer in the country that has one, and they're on the east coast.

That seems to be the story with this car all the time - every time I need a part, I have to wait 2 weeks, then the part comes in, I find I need another part, wait another 2 weeks, etc. I'm getting tired of this senseless waiting so I wanted to just make my own hose.

Looking at the hose, I can see that I can't simply replace it with some generic hose-by-the-foot from Kragen. The OE hose has a sort of valve poking out the side of it, near the end at the AOS. I don't know what this valve is for... possibly maintaining a consistent crankcase vacuum? Well I figure it must be important.

So my questions are,

Anyone know where I can get a replacement hose, aside from Germany or Florida?

Anyone know if that valve is truly necessary (944s didn't have it)?

Anyone know if I can fabricate something similar (home depot stuff maybe)?

Anyone know if I can just splice that old valve from the old hose into the new generic hose? This is what I'm leaning towards doing.

TIA.

I think I may have one or two laying around. I will check when I get home tonight.

PM me your email address and I will send you a picture to make sure it is the hose you need.

Sounds as if a solution is near. Here in Albuquerque, New Mexico there is an industrial hose company (PECO) that can make a duplicate of almost any hose you can give tham. Usually cheaper than Porsche prices and much quicker than waiting for shipping from Germany. They have made the clutch hydraulic hose and an air conditioner hose for me so far with only a day or two waiting time. Maybe there is a place like that near you? Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

AOS: Air Oil Separator

also known as PCV, etc. Is there another common name for it around here? On a 944/968 it's the black plastic oil-fill tube & housing. The hose I need is the one that goes from this AOS to the throttle body.

You know those 3 curved hoses that go into the top of the TB? The ones on the left and right are for coolant. The one in the middle is for vacuum, and that's the one I need.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look around for a hose shop or the like.

I just remembered the problem with using a custom hose... it won't have that valve thing. I don't know what it does, exactly, but it's some kind of check valve or purge valve. I'm not sure if it's really important but I won't nix it until I know for sure it's nix-able.
