bmw m5 (e34) vs 968 cs vs 996 C4S - green cs adam - 08-23-2007

Hi,

thought I'd just share my latest experience with you.

I have a 94 CS M030 with Torsen, signal green, Promax 7100 and airbox mod, totally restored (took 5 months )

The other day, after trying a 996 C4S (2004) on a twisty road and then the next day as the memories were still fresh I had a go in my 968 CS, too. I am not saying that the 968 is faster or anything like that - couldn't tell as it was on a public road - but I can tell that the 968 isn't at all behind the 10 years younger 911 in terms of driving pleasure or fun. I used to long for a 911 (more precisely a 964 RS or a 996 MK1 GT3), but this longing has pretty much subsided. However, I still consider the 964 RS one of the best Porsches ever.

Then, I recently bought a Bimmer M5 e34 Touring with Nurburgring suspension (my favorite model of M5s) for daily use (from March till Oct I ride my Aprilia RSV anyway). These M5s were truly hand built by BMW M Motorsport unit, it took them 6 weeks to finish a car. I really love it.

But, I commited a great mistake, I took it for a comparison drive to the same twisty bit of road, which I shouldn't have. After the 968 the M5 felt like a bus in the tight turns, the Porsche just dusted it. OK, I know that it is 350 kg heavier but has 100 HP more. Still, even in straight line, from rolling start the Porsche had the nose ahead.

In terms of driving fun, there isn't a class, but at least 2 or 3 between the M5 and the 968. And I am saying this of one of my favorite cars.

Before driving my 968 hard, I always thought that articles and posts saying that the 968 is as good as any 911 or that their owners would never trade them for a 911 were nostalgic and sentimental. Now, I have to admit, that I tend to believe those opinions.

To sum it up: never had a more enjoyable car than the 968. It matches my bike for fun, which is the biggest compliment, I guess.

indeed welcomed comments. see somewhat related post I put up the other day : http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=4312

and that was in a straight line, I would have massacred the M5 if there were any twists in the road

the chipped, airboxed, and catback modded 968 coupe WILL also stay a nose ahead of a '04 C4 cab in a straight line. I outran 2 separate ones, in spite of published stats which would have you believe otherwise.

granted it was not a C4S and not a coupe so that could be the reason, but it was still a 10 year younger 911

which cost about 5 X what our cars go for.

yeah, I'm happy I drive a 968 !!!!

As I source a replacement motor for my hatch release and prepare to pull apart my headliner to replace sunroof gears this weekend, I am grinning at this reminder of why. Awesome post!

I tend to agree with those who say that to better a 968 in a 911 you have to be a very good driver. On unfamiliar roads, I think, the 968 would win.

I still think that on the track I am faster on the bike, but I'll never know for sure as the Porsche is in a too good state to take it on a race track...

Anyway, I had lots of good cars, Subaru Impreza turbos, STIs, etc, but none of them came close to the Porsche.

I also let my friends try it, otherwise they wouldn't have believed me. One of them - a non-smoker - got out and lit a cigarette right away. I think that just about says it all.

E34 M5 Touring? I'm going to go ahead and guess you don't live in the States. The only one of those I've ever seen was on the streets of Lausanne....many moons ago.

Cheers,

What a guess . Yes, I am in Hungary, Europe. We are lucky enough to have the M5 Touring, also.
