So the brakes on my 968 are making a very annoying squealing noise on occasion during very light braking. Only happens when I'm moving around in a parking lot, etc and just barely moving(5mph or less). Doesn't always do it... maybe 50% of the time.
The pads and rotors on the car have about 6k miles on them (pretty sure that's what the receipt from the PO said... it certainly wasn't much) with oem replacement items. I will be doing a shock change this weekend, so I'll get in there and have a good look around at things.
Any common issues that this sounds like? Lack of anti-squeal shims?

can you tell if it is the front or the rear?
does it change when you pull up on the parking brake? DO THIS VERY CAREFULLY AND JUST A LITTLE BIT, WITH YOUR THUMB ON THE BUTTON!

sounds like it's coming from the front, but it's difficult to tell.

does it do it only going straight?
does it change if you turn?
the first thing i would do is look for bearing wobble if it's up front - i did feel something in the front left, but it was small
once that is eliminated, then it's off to the brakes - do the normal spin of the wheel and listen for noise

does it while going straight, while turning, etc... it only happens during VERY slow movement with VERY light braking
goes away instantly if I push the pedal harder
could this be something as simple as during the last brake pad change the little cages weren't replaced?

It's very normal - all my Porsches do this. If you really want to get rid of it, you should stick a narrow shim between the pad and the caliper. You can use a sheet of plastic, vinyl, or I like to use a piece of tape. I used to see new brake pads come with a perfectly shaped sheet of plastic and those never squeaked.

Actually I just remembered my benz brake pads come with a thin plate of metal attached to the back of the pad with a thin film of sticky paste in between. If you just emulate this somehow, you should be good to go.

Use of copperpaste with an anti squeeking shim will help.

tried this a couple times, didn't make any difference

ok - that should rule out the parking brake shoes as the problem
that leaves pad misalignment or looseness, or a foreign object stuck in there

Mine did the actually the same way.
Check the pad today it still has lots left.
Sort of annoying.

Just my $.02...
When I have held a driving event for 968s, you can always tell when the crew is coming to a stop because all if the cars have some brake squeal to some extent . Not that you shouldn't check out your problem, but I think it's unlikely that you're doomed either.

Jay

Not to try to make things difficult - but my brakes have no squeal at all. MetalMaster pads, Zimmerman crossdrilled rotors.

Sounds to me like the rotors are glazed, try a few hard/fast stops (not lock up but quick) and see if it stops for a while. If it does you could try sanding the rotors and pads to break the glaze then do the re-seat procedure again.

I'm very tempted to just replace the pads with something that's known for not squeaking a ton...
also, it's worth mentioning that there's a difference between a little bit of brake squeaking, and the squealing I'm talking about here. This is loud enough that it's scared pedestrians when I come to a stop, etc. It's VERY loud.

I haven't had a problem with brake squeek on either of my 968s, but my experience with squeeking motorcycle brakes is that, no matter how many shims and anti-squeek compounds you try, the surest way to get rid of the noise is to try different pads.

not a single squeak with my porterfeild R4-S pads

you can attach a stethoscope to my breaks and you still would not hear a sound - ceramics by PBR. and not atrace of dust either.
