Flash, my first quick reading of your reply made me laugh, as I read it to mean that the rotors were in your back yard (which, honestly, would not have surprised me). Then I realized that you meant that this company is in your "back yard". Great, I'll be interested in what you learn.

Haha, that's actually what I thought too and it the only thing that surprised me was that Flash would have the rotors rusting away in his backyard instead of protected in the garage somewhere <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

ok - so i have talked to them - took some doing, but i got them to tell me the real deal

turns out (pardon the pun) that these are actually zimmermans that they buy undrilled - then they put them in their CNC and drill and slot them, and then zinc them

not a bad price for drilled, slotted and zinced - i'll probably do this on my next set if for some reason i cannot work out the aluminum hat setup

nope - knowing what they paid for the rotors, knowing what the machining costs would be, even in house, and the fact that they said those were semi-metallic, coupled with the price being too low to be a really good pad, i did not go any farther - i figured they were a budget pad like metal masters or something

besides, since the rotors are zimmerman, i already know what pad to use

I just ordered a set of the rotors from iROTORS, INC.

Why Porterfield R4-S instead of many other choices?

What do you mean by "without a doubt"?

The part # for a stock, 968 set of Porterfield pads is:

i've driven MANY different pads on the 968, on both stock and these zimmerman rotors (which the irotors are) - without question, the porterfeild R4S has been the best grabbing street pad, with the best compromise on dust, no noise, and no cold stops

race pads might grab better, but make noise, and generally have cold stops - other street pads might make less dust, but have either noise, cold stops, or less grab

they have far exceeded the abilities of any street pad by repco (including the metalmaster, ceramic, and deluxe), pagid, mintex, and a couple of others i can't remember the names of right now

i liked them so much, i put them on the troublesome E46 - LOVE THEM there too - totally solved my problem - will be putting them on the denali if it ever wears these pads enough

even instructors have commented on how well they grab, wondering if i installed big reds

pop down and drive the car - you'll run right out and buy them

I agree Flash.... I've been through numerous pads on my 72 911(that I autox) and without a doubt the Porterfield R4's are the best that I've tried. It's funny that you really don't hear much about this pad but it will definitely be my next set for the 968.

Got the Irotor drilled and slotted, plated, Zimmerman rotors installed today. While she was in I had Porterfield R4 street pads and DOT approved braided stainless lines installed.

Complete brake fluid replacement and bled.

I did not get a chance to "bed" them in yet but the pedal feels MUCH better. Those of you who have had the stainless clutch line installed will know what I mean. The best way that I can describe the difference is that without stainless braided lines the hydraulics feel like some of your effort is going toward enlarging the diameter of the lines and the rest into moving the piston, when you install the lines, since the pressure is all directed to the piston, it feels like you have a mechanical connection, but without the metal "hinge" feeling.

The pads are quite, but until they get bedded in, they are a bit slippery and require a bit more pressure/distance to stop that with OEM pads.

The rotors, visually improve the car, especially when you have a large window in the wheel to see through. It also adds a more updated, serious sports car look. The plated center section is a visual plus as well. As my 968 is a DD, I am not too concerned about the gas/heat benefits of the rotors, but I am sure that to some of you, this will be another improvement.

When it is time for you to replace rotors, I would recommend that you upgrade your brake/rotor system with these components. The brake lines would be a great upgrade when you perform your brake fluid routine.
