Stereo distortion - Scott Collins - 11-05-2007

My Porsche ('92) CD-2 stereo w/ 6 speakers has the following problem: distortion in the passenger side door speakers. It's bad enough that I have to fade the sound to the rear speakers. It's particularly annoying because my car is my musical temple of solitude.

I have inspected the speakers and found that there is no visible damage to the speakers themselves.

I would appreciate any suggestions or solutions from anyone who has dealt with this problem. Seems like for every problem I experience there is probably someone(s) who have already "been there done that".

Thanks for feedback. -Scott

i would pull the speaker and connect it to a known good source to see if it is the speaker or the amp (deck)

Forgot to mention - ordered new speakers from Sunset - hooked them up - still got the same distortion. What next?

Stereo distortion - flash - 11-05-2007

if it's distortion and not crackling and such, it's in the amplification circuit - not much you can do - on the 6 speaker setup (2 in the door and one in the rear per side) there is no external amplifier, and all power comes from the deck - so.

deck is shot - fix or replace

How much did you pay for the speakers. I need a set for the passenger side.

Stereo distortion - Glau - 11-05-2007

You may want to check the wires and crossovers (if any?)installed in the car by bypassing them with new wire directly from the deck to the speaker, no need to install the wire in the car, before you blame the deck. I would be testing with the old speaker first as a signal that causes bad/loud distortion can damage your new speakers. I would be especially careful with lone tweeters (cutoff low freqs) but I dont think you are talking about them?

no crossovers in the 6 speaker setup - wire won't cause distortion - bad signal yes, but not distortion - it's one end or the other

as i said above though, and others have also subsequently said, test the speakers with a known good source

They were less than I thought, about $80 for a pair of the speakers that go below

the armrests.

I guess that it must be the unit that is bad. Bummer because I like the unit and it's OE so

it looks good. So many of the new units look like a video game. Not my style or the

style of the 968. I will have to find a replacement the sounds and looks right.

Thanks for the feedback.

Scott - Look at the Nakamichis; they have the correct look. I picked up a CD-400 last winter and am very happy with it. It was just a little pricer than the typical Alpine or Pioneer, and with the 24bit D-A converter in the CD, I'm hearing stuff I never heard before on some of my CD's.

I had the 10-speaker hi-fi option in my '94, but I've replaced all of the factory speakers and abandoned the factory amps as well.

I'm not 100% happy with my choice for rear speakers (I got some MB-quart 6.5" component) so I might still replace those with something with a bit more solid bass or I might add something like a small bazooka tube powered sub, but otherwise, I like it.

just heard a nak in a cab saturday - not bad - granted though the car had a custom sub and aftermarket speakers - but it looked very "original" as aftermarket decks go - no bling bling video display - not a lot of audio control though

jpk,

Thanks for the tip. It looks great and I am sure will be a major upgrade in sound over the CD-2, which

in addition to the static distortion is hit or miss in playing CD's.

Any problems with the transport or with playing CD's? There's some feedback out there suggesting the

unit has this problem. Also, does it have I-Pod hookup?

Thanks.

It's an older design, so there's no I-pod specific hookup or controls, but you do have RCA inputs on the back. There are also RCA outputs as well. I use the inputs for my XM tuner and it sounds very good.

I haven't had any issues with the CD player skipping. I have KW coilovers installed so my car rides a bit harsher than stock, and it hasn't been a problem at all.

The amber color matches very well with the interior lighting of the car. The only issue I've noticed is with the screen angle, the display doesn't have as sharp a contrast as when you look at it straight on, but it's not that bad. It's still very readable from the driver's seat.

jpk,

So you would just pull the RCA line out to the armrest or something for the I-Pod? I like the fact that the display on the Nakamichi is not a "light show". My '87 944 had a Kenwood unit that the p/o had installed and it looked like "Kit" from Knight Rider. Lights going back and forth, etc.

What should I expect to pay? I have seen a bunch of different prices for the unit out there, from E-Bay to Crutchfield. Also, do you think I have to replace the stock speakers to get the benefit of the unit? Thanks.

The RCA inputs are on a short "pigtail" lead comming out of the back of the unit. I plugged in a short RCA to 1/8" stereo lead, and ran that up under the console to the armrest. This plugs into the headphone jack of my XM. There's plenty of room behind the clock to tuck away the extra wire. You can see everything in the pics below.

Right now, I'm just pulling the wire up under the hinge of the armrest. Given the frailty of the hinge, I'm planning on drilling a hole through the bottom front of the armrest compartment so I can run the wires directly inside; It'll just be a 3/8" hole going forward toward the ashtray, and I'll be able to pull the wires through there.

I bought mine from onlinecarstereo.com, but they no longer list the cd-400, only the cd-300, which is quite different. My understanding is that the cd-300 is made by Clarion (not necessarilly a bad thing) and the biggest difference is in the CD player; 1-bit vs 24-bit D-A converters. I paid something like $329; I don't remember exactly. There's one on e-bay right now, looks like it'll go for around $300.

I replaced all of my speakers as well, mostly because I couldn't figgure out exactly how the factory amps in my car were set up; it looked like the door speakers were powered by an external amp getting a line level signal, and the rear speakers were getting a speaker level signal fed to amplifiers built into the speakers themselves. Since I had a blown tweeter in one door and a buzz in one of the rear speakers, I just replaced everything. You should be fine with your car since everything is simply driven off the head unit. The factory Nokia speakers aren't bad at all; and you can always chage those out later if you wish.
