New Stereo installed (Alpine 9887) - EEZATOY - 12-08-2007

I just finished installing a new stereo in my coupe - Alpine 9887 - and it sounds fantastic

More stereo than I've ever had...it would probably even make Bob (aka Flash) happy - choice of 7 band graphic or 5 band parametric EQ, time correction, built in crossover, 24-Bit Burr-Brown D/A converter, ipod connection (separate cable)) and on and on....for only a little over $300.

Coupled with and image dynamics 8" sub in KLA's enclosure (rear right cubby) powered by it's own amp (400w mono), I replaced the rear speakers with infinity kappa's - I was going to replace the fronts with matching kappa's but they didn't fit with the map pocket grills (protruded to much), so for now the fronts are original...but like I said - it really sounds great and for xmas my wife is going to get me the HD/multicasting module.

At the same time I installed a window express for the drivers door window - really easy to do once you've taken the door panel off. And I rewired my switches - similar to Flashes except I kept the a drivers window control on the door and split it so I can control it from the center console or the door. I moved the mirror selector switch to the door and the passenger window to the center console - so now my center console switches are drivers window, sun roof, passenger window, door lock, and rear wiper.

I plan on replacing the blank with my old telephone mute switch and wiring it to the garage door opener, but the blank is a different clip than the regular switches - so I will have to play with that a bit...

All and all some nice mod's and did I say the stereo sounds really great - very loud and clean....

Looks like a nice setup. I have a very similar stereo setup. I have an Alpine but forget the model...it's not as nice as yours. I did the exact same thing w/ my amp and stuck it over the spare tire. And instead of buying the KLA enclosure, I made a custom fiberglass one.

I haven't gotten around to replacing the stock speakers yet, but it sounds pretty damn good the way it is now. A lot better than stock.

Nice, that switch set up looks way more logical.

Nice work!

I just picked up a 9887 to replace my kenwood. I should have it installed in the next week or so.

The 9887 sounds great - especially in CD and Ipod modes. I love the Ipod control - accessing and viewing song/artist etc - all thru the head unit.

I just got the HD/Multicasting unit for Christmas and should hopefully get it installed this weekend. I'll see how it improves the radio quality, which isn't bad - just not the same as CD's & Ipod. I really like having the multicasting feature (lets you know song and artist playing - depending on what the radio station transmits).

I'll be curious to see how you like all the different adjustments available on the 9887 - I've played with the crossover, time delay (very cool), and parametric equalizer - but could benefit from someone (audiophile type) to help dial in the best sound stage....

Bottom line - I love it, it sounds better than any of my previous stereo's.....

Has anyone installed a double DIN GPS/stereo unit?

Also what are the sizes for the speakers to replace them. My stereo sucks as the wiring was not put back correctly after some paint repair work. THis is on my list to do, and is getting close to getting done (almost out of mechanical mods to do).

Craig....what on earth do you need a stereo for in your supercharged track car!!!!!

Yup. This is an early photo, it's flush-mounted now moreso than in the pic.

The Stig listens to his stereo all the time during laps on the TG test track

That stereo looks really good.

Maybe I should re-think this......whats good for the stig is good for me type thing......!

My car although modified greatly is still registered. Now being in Perth, I can drive to and from events. Not even being able to listen to the radio really sucks. When the car was always on a trailer being towed to and from events - it was not a problem. So, rather than having to have a GPS stuck to the windscreen (and the cigarette lighter is an odd size as well), I was going to get a double DIN stereo with GPS built in - so I actually know where I am meant to go. I was thinking that I would have to replace all of the speakers, wiring, plus the head unit (most likely an Alpine unit).

My Ipod has a playlist called Driving Music - it does really help "get you in the mood" for a bit of aggressive driving.

If I was to be the Stig, I would be his fat cousin rather than the real thing. If the car needs to lose more weight, there is at least 25kg that the driver could lose first.

Good luck with the install. My 'stereo' for the commute consists of noise cancelling headphones - they have superb sound. Funny - I actually have an identically titled playlist for the same purpose!

I would like to know the speakers' sizes for the 10 speaker option too. Did anybody find some direct fits? I want to keep the head unit (Alpine) and the stock wiring and amplifiers, just replace the speakers.
